Show CHAPTER Xm FREMONT ISLAND BECOMES A SHEEP RANGE Fremont Island is a triangular shaped island located ' five miles north of Antelope Island and two miles south of Promontory Point It consists chiefly of a rocky ridge extending about 800 feet above the surface of the lake From the south point the slope is very gradual for some five miles A climb up this slope is from the water line to the summit relatively easy On the southeast slope is a flat plain extending gradually into the lake From some angles the summit of the island has the appearance of an old castle and was given the name "Castle Island" by Mormon explorers in 1848 The island contains 2948 acres which has been carried on the Weber County assessor’s books at an evaluation of $8250 about since the early 1920’s Unless James Clyman and his company when visited the island they circumnavigated the lake in 1826 (which is possible but unlikely) John first were C Fremont and four companions were the O to visit the island in 1843 After Fremont the next men to visit Fremont Island members of the flMud Henw crew of Mormon explorers who white men 1 WPA Writers’ Project Utah 2 Supra 485 p 120 A Guide to the State |
