By JUDY JENSEN Editor A bill introduced into the legislature, if passed, would revoke the drivers license of students under the age of 18 who drop out of school or exhibit unacceptable behavior at school. We asked members of the community com-munity if they would support this legislation. Kathy Schvaneveldt said she feels the decision to drop out of school should be the students. "It's their choice if they want to drop out of schooL They are two different things, driving and school. There shouldn't be a new law. Parents should have the controL some kids would rather rebel than obey the law anyway. If a new law was passed pass-ed it might just make criminals out of kids. Some kids would just steal j car. What's going to stop them? I think a law would just make some lads more rebellious," she said. Barbara Nebeker agreed. "No, there should not be a law that would take away their drivers license. I'm just wondering if the government should take over the responsibility of parents. The desire for learning has to begin at home. It can't be forced in the schools," she said. "I think they should get their license revoked, ' said Julie Carlsen. "They may not be responsible respon-sible enough to drive if they are not responsible enough to stay in school," she said. Julie said she feels if the student goes back to school the drivers license should be restored. "I'm a sophomore in high school, and I plan to graduate. I think it's a good idea to take away the drivers license if kids are going to drop out," said Kenny Carlsen. "Everyone who wants to graduate can. This might give some kids an incentive to stay in school," he said. David Bardall disagreed. "It may be a good incentive to keep kids in school, but there are a lot of kids that don't have the option. Many -kids come from a family where the parents have been separated, and they are forced into taking a job. Part of the problem we have with dropouts is the teaching system. |
