Show Kaysville senior citizens center delayed from lack of funds I I- ' " t - : I S "jj ' I . - . : 1 I I By SCOTT SUMMERILL Despite delays and financial snags, the senior citizens center in Kaysville is slated to open its doors the first part of March. Director of Davis County Council Coun-cil on Aging Alice J. Johnson said the building is virtually complete except for the kitchen. However, there are still outstanding utility and contractor bills that must be taken care of. "We have bids of about $3,400 on the kitchen," she said. "We still need to raise $8,000 to $9,000 on top of what we need for the kitchen. But, we've already raised $2,000. It's coming along." Johnson said once the building is finished and all bills and liens are paid, the county will take over ownership and maintenance of the facility. But, she said there is still a lot of work to be done and money to be raised through fund-raising activities. ac-tivities. "I don't blame the seniors for being anxious," she said. "But, we can't spend all our time fund-raising." Part of the problem has been getting some of the cities to confirm con-firm their commitments to the center. But, Johnson said the negotiations nego-tiations are firming up. "It takes a long time to work with local politicians " she said. "But, they've been very cooperative so far." According to Johnson, the facility facil-ity is well beyond the current needs of the senior citizens in the area. However, growth trends indicate the center will be filled to capacity in the near future. "It's going to be much larger than we need at first," she said. "But that's just good planning. There was an 80 percent growth in the senior citizen population from 1980 to 1990." When the center does open, Johnson said there won't be much furniture. However, when things get running at full capacity, there will beevents planned to raise funds for more. "We won't be able to handle hundreds of people at first," she said. "But, we'll get there soon " III! i - ii i m Layton City Councilman Robert Stephenson and Davis County Commissioners William (Dub) Lawrence, Gayle Stevenson and William Peters, joined Alice Johnson, Director of Davis County Council on Aging on Monday at the new Kaysville Senior Citizens Center.
