Show Vikings5 armor couldn't stop Darts Davis takes command in Region One action By GARY BLODGETT Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL Viewmont High's Vikings used all their available armor but couldn't rally enough to upset the Davis High Darts here Friday night. The highly-favored Darts, visiting here from Kaysville, staved off a last-quarter rally to nip the Vikings 63-59. The win increased the league-leading Darts to 6-1 in Region One, while the loss dropped the Vikes to 2-5 in league play. Viewmont was coming off a highly-spirited win over Layton the previous Wednesday, and it looked for a moment that an upset was in the making. But Davis had built up too large of a lead, 10 points with only two minutes to play, to allow the Vikes to rally for a win. But the Vikes did put on a spirited rally in the final minutes and closed the gap to four point: with a buzzer-sounding 3 -pointer. Davis dominated the game once the two teams got clicking. But for the first few minutes, both teams were colder than the weather out- ; side. They missed easy shots, committed com-mitted more turnovers than they would like to remember, and their ; defenses were loose. : But it didn't matter much since 1 both teams failed to show : dominance. Davis finally moved in front 10-5, led by Brad Gardner ; with two long comer shots and a pair of layups by Dave Newby. In the next four minutes, View-: View-: mont rallied for 12 unanswered j points including two 3 -pointers : by Jason Crandall and Greg Clark r to take a 17-10 lead late in the opening stanza. The Vikes led 18-12 at the close of one period of play, but Davis knotted the score at 18 early in the second quarter, and the two teams battled on even terms with the score tied twice and changed hands three times in the first half. Davis finally pulled ahead by one, 27-26, at intermission. There was little scoring by either team in the third period, but the Darts did manage to hang onto a four-point lead going into the final quarter. After narrowing the gap to 42-40, the Vikes fell 10 points behind on three beautiful "backdoor" layups by Newby and Craig Packer. Viewmont s Crandall put together two of his three 3 -point shots from outside the key late in the final period, but the damage had already been done. Newby led all scorers with 21 points, including eight field goals and 5-7 from the foul lane. Jon Rhodes led the offensive playmak-ing playmak-ing and scored 10 points despite a heavy cast on his left knee to protect pro-tect a serious football injury. Viewmont had a cast of offensive players which delivered a balanced attack. Steve Edgley, 6-foot 5 junior center, dumped in 14 points, including in-cluding six field goals from inside; Sean filler and Crandall each had 1 1 ; and Brad Rencher, Tyler Gledhill and John Robison, 5-foot 10 sophomore and son of the Darts coach, each tallied eight points. With five games remaining in Region One action, Viewmont will travel to Roy Friday, and Davis will play at Clearfield. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. Hustling Jon Rhodes, of Davis, gets a little more than a piece of the ball as he scrambles for the loose ball with Viewmont's Tyler Gledhill. It was a hard-fought, but well-played game between the two Region One teams with the Darts coming out on the long end of a 63-59 score. Davis remains atop the league standings with a 6-1 mark.
