Show Delta Kappa Gamma woman of year At a recent luncheon at Oakridge Country Club, Barbara J. Manfull ; was presented as "Woman of the Year" by Kappa Chapter of the coordinating co-ordinating council of Davis County for Delta Kappa Gamma, a womens teacher s honorary society. Barbara was bom in Logan, where she learned to hike and climb around in barns. When the family moved to Bountiful she traded bams for bikes, weedy fields and hikes in oak brush. Barbara went to school at historic Stoker, Bountiful Elementary, South Davis Junior, Davis and Bountiful high schools, where she studied art and served as the student body vice president for the first graduating class. Barbara studied art at the University Univer-sity of Utah, where she was affiliated af-filiated with Chi Omega. A love for music, science, history and other interests in-terests lured her away from the art center when she realized an education edu-cation to teach all things was right up her alley. Barbara began her teaching career ca-reer at J. A. Taylor Elementary when it opened in 1961. She taught third grade and in her spare time set her cap for Jesse D. Manfull. In June of 1962 they were married in the Logan Temple. Barbara taught at Taylor school for four years after which she retired temporarily for ten years in order to raise her four children, Merrill David, Matthew Tod, Melanie Christine and James McKay. translated into 16 languages and is used worldwide by the church today. to-day. She became interested in a budding bud-ding local production of the "Messiah" and soon found herself on the board of directors of the South Davis Community Choir. She does the advertising and artwork for the concerts. Barbara has also been a part of the birth of the Bountiful Community Communi-ty Theater. She joined with a school friend, Sheri Cole, to help present "Camelot" at Viewmont High School in 1973. Barbara painted all the sets. Besides teaching school, Barbara has been active in the scouting program pro-gram and the young women's programs pro-grams for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If you ask her what she likes best about that she will enthusiastically tell you that it is the camping and water-skiing. Barbara was a charter member of Kappa Chapter and has served her chapter as president twice. She was chairman of the state convention at Snowbird some years ago and had a wonderful time making table decorations dec-orations out of oak brush. This past summer Barbara served on the committee which sponsored the appearance of entertainers from Whangarei, New Zealand, Bountiful' Boun-tiful' s sister city. Her connection with the arts in Bountiful helped her come up with the idea of a project for Kappa Chapter which now serves as guild for the Bountiful Symphony, South Davis Community Communi-ty Choir. She is a busy lady with a third-fourth third-fourth split at Meadowbrook and punching three books into her computer com-puter and attending the University of Utah, working on a master's degree in children's literature. She was the 1989 recipient of the Alpha Theta state scholarship. After McKay was killed in a tragic accident, Barbara went back to the University of Utah to recertify. recer-tify. At that time she found a new direction of study because of a growing interest in children's literature. litera-ture. Barbara began teaching at Meadowbrook Elementary in 1976. As her children at home grew, Barbara Bar-bara became active in many pur-suits. pur-suits. She was called to the curriculum cur-riculum committee of the general board of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help write manuals, one of which has been |
