Show w Hot-shooting Murray defeats faltering WX Wildcats, 78-64 By TOM HARALDSEN WOODS CROSS-Murray High used a powerful offensive performance perfor-mance inside to down Woods Cross 78-64 in Region Six basketball Friday Fri-day night. The Spartans shot 58 percent the first half and finished with 53 percent shooting for the night The key to this game appeared to be the Spartans' ability to drive the lane. Jeremy Winget, who at 6-0 isn't particularly tall, worked inside all evening, finishing with 18 points, including 8-15 shooting from the field. It was a contest marred by many fouls (41) and some sloppy play on both sides. Murray took a 16-11 lead in the first quarter, but the Wildcats fought back hard to regain the lead at 18-16 after Greg Poole grabbed a rebound and scored. Only a basket by Kevin Carlston at the buzzer allowed the Spartans to remain even at 1 8 -all after one period. But Murray scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, taking a 26-18 lead it never relinquished. Kitt Rawtings' basket made it 26-20, 26-20, but Woods Cross drew no closer the rest of the way. While Carlston remained hot in the second period, Woods Cross went cold, hitting just 3-of-9 shots from the field while Murray was 9-of-14. Only six straight free throws by Justin Peterson kept the Wildcats close, and when Winget scored at the buzzer, it was 43-31 Murray at halftime. Woods Cross made a short run at the Spartans in the third quarter. With Murray up 49-36, Rawlings drilled a three-pointer, and Matt King made a free throw to cut the lead to 49-40. Woods Cross got possession of the ball again, but failed to score, and free throws by Winget and B J. Rosenhan, coupled by a three-point bomb from Carlston, made it 56-40 and put this game basically out of reach. The Wildcats drew to within 12 at 67-55 in the fourth period, but could get no closer. Murray continued con-tinued to work the ball inside seemingly seem-ingly at will, and the Spartans moved mov-ed to 3-5 in league with the win, while Woods Cross dropped to 1-7. Carlston led all scorers with 20 points, Dave Madsen added 19 and Winget 18 for Murray. Rawlings led Woods Cross with 14, Poole had 11 and Peterson 10. Woods Cross made 21 of 52 from the field (41) and 19 of 29 from the line. For the Wildcats, the task gets tougher, as they host Jordan Tuesday Tues-day then travel to Judge on Friday evening. |
