Show IlELlGfflf Leases Big Eastern Factory and Will Increase Auto Output. Xew3 of the taking over of the Chalmers Chal-mers plant by the Maxwell Motor Car corporation Is embodied in a bulletin just received by Sales Manager J. O. Gates of the Sun Motor Sales company, local Max- ell distributor. This leasing of the Chalmers plant for five years to the Maxwell Motor Car corporation cor-poration -is the announcement carried in an official letter from Hush Chalmers of the Chalmers company to every Chalmers distributing agency throughout the United States last week. Details of the lease have already been worked out, according to Mr. Chalmers, but ratification of the board of directors is necessary, and a meeting of the stockholders stock-holders is called for September 10 for this purpose. The Chalmers cars will continue con-tinue to be" built in the Chalmers shops, Mr. Chalmers ''stales. The surplus ca via city of the plant will be utilized by the Maxwell company for other purposes, presumably for the manu- facture of the Maxwell truck, a new product prod-uct of the Maxwell company this year. The output of the trucks will be increased, and the assumption here is that the Chalmers pleasure car output will be decreased de-creased somewhat, though, this is not announced an-nounced officially. The Chalmers factory only last year put in a very large amount of new machinery, ma-chinery, and the plant as it stands today is one of the best equipppd In the country, coun-try, it is said. This is also its first year of assembling by the endless-chain system. sys-tem. It is generally known that Walter E. Flanders, president and general manager of the -Maxwell company, has been spending spend-ing much of his time for the last six months at the Chalmers factory, and under the new regime the Chalmers plant will be under his direct charge. Hugh .Chalmers will remain as chairman of the board of directors under the new alliance. Considerable comment on the Maxwell-Chalmers Maxwell-Chalmers alliance has been made In current cur-rent issues of motor magazines. Automobile Auto-mobile Topics, published in New York City, printed the following in the August 25 issue: "Throughout the trade there has been a feeling and expression of interested surprise at the disclosure that the operation opera-tion was under way, and a recognition of the fact that such a combination as i-V being worked out would reinforce both the Chalmers and Maxwell companies, and therefore render their dealerships even more attractive than thev are at present. There even has been some discussion dis-cussion as to possibilities of placing the two lines of cars, wherever possible, under practically a single dealer bodv-This bodv-This is based on recognition of the fact that the lines are supplementary, not competitive, which Is. of course, "one of the considerations making possible the plans now being worked out by the Maxwell Max-well and Chalmers interests." However stress has been laid on the fact that there is no intention whatever of disturbing disturb-ing present satisfactory dealerships. The natural and proper supposition is that where Improvement will result from an alliance it will be carefully considered." |
