Show GOLD C01 IS TAKER! FROM SPANISH SHIP Attempt to Smuggle $50,-000 $50,-000 Out of U. S. Is Foiled. A GULF PORT, Sept. 13. Customs officials toilay boarded a Spanish steamer steam-er here shortly before tho vessel was scheduled to depart for a European port and seized $40,;!00 in gold secreted in a barrel of salt pork that formed a part of the ship's stores. An investigation conducted bv the federal district attorney was followed bv the arrest of three members of the ship's crew, charged with violating President Wilson's proclamation of September Sep-tember Irt, prohibiting the exporting of gold save upon license. Officials at first were inclined to the belief, they said, that the gold bears some relation to reports that (ler-many (ler-many has received gold through communication com-munication of her submarines with neutral neu-tral ships. Following the investigation com-I ment was withheld. Full details were wired to Washington tonight bv the collector of the port. While officials were inclined to await i 'further developments before making I public details of the investigation, it j is understood the monev was obtained j bv the ship's cook from a local bank. The cook cashed a draft fur the fuil j amount on a bank in Havana. The in- i dividual giving the draft is a Spaniard. I it is said. Rank officials declined to I make a statement of the transaction.
