Show FIHI5 TO COMPETE 1 ATHLETIC MEET t April Tourney to Inlue Track and Field, Beyseball and Other Events. 1 Aieatur ol the sprlnfrathlotlc season at the University of Utaii wtU ba tno biff lnter-fraternity alhlctlo carnival, wCuoh will Include a four-beam track and field moot, a championship baseball series of eight gameB, a crossHcountry run, a tennis ten-nis tournoy and awreBtlinff and boxing tournament. Taemoot Is to ba hold In the flrat week ot-April. Tho contestants in this carnival will bo the membors of tho four big social fraternities Beta Thota PI, Sigma Chi. Amlcl Fldlsalmo nnd PI Kappa Alpha. A member of any of these clubs will bo eligible for competition, competi-tion, and since, with only one or two minor exceptions, every flrat-class athlete ath-lete In the university Is associated with one or another of these four fraternities, the competition will doubtless bring out some excellent work. Tho trade nnd field events will bo tho blue ribbon feature of the meet and will be watched by all the coaches In tho state, as (his will be the first opportunity of seeing what the cast benchers will have to send into tho state meet against tho B, y. TJ. and the Aggies. Each year Coach Bennlon 0ms staged a number of meets among the different athletes of the university, for the purpose of finding now material. In each case, however, he lias found It necessary to bnr from competition athletes who had won their "TJ" before. In order to got groen men onto the flold. This has made ft impossible for lilm to get his veterans to stretch themselves to anything Hko their capacity until the day of the first meet, and, consequently, lie has always been In doubt as to just what condition liis mou arc In. Rivalry Is Keen. With the fratornltlcs handling this big preliminary contest, however, there is no doubt that each man will do hin best. Thn rivalry among the fraternities, though friendly. Is of tho keenest nature, and an opportunity to establish superiority superi-ority In somo activity or nnothor over tho rest of tho clubs Is never overlooked by any of tho Greek-letlor organizations. In each of the organisations there are a couple of bright stars, but the veterans are fairly well divided, and the probability probabil-ity is that the division of first places will bo complete enough to enable the club that can gather In a largo number of second places to win the meet Since the meet Is not under the direct supervision of the athletic council, much speculation among the campus "Greeks" Is being Indulged In. and more Interest Is being displayed in the carnival than In tho Inlorcolleglate events scheduled for the. spring. The Beta Thela Pis are the favorites In the betting on the track meet, while the PI Kappa Alphas are expected to take b.-isebal! honors. The Amlcl Fldlsslmo and the Beta men should put up a beautiful beau-tiful tussle for the championship in wrestling and boxing. The Sigma Chi boys have not among their number any notable stars, hut they have a larger number of average men than any of tho other societies. Fast Men Enlisted. In track, the Betas will be represented "V , Creed Haymond, Jack Travers, Earl Ilson, Harold Teasdel and Rov Mcln-tyrc. Mcln-tyrc. The two lirst named should take first and second In the short sprints and nt least a second in the 440-yard dash. Teasdel and Wilson should be good for about eight points In the distances. Roy Mclntyre should take the shot put and take first or second in the discus. Tho PI Kappas should clean up first in both the mile and the liaif-mUe, with Captain Jamison of the varsity track team. Cutler of tho name club should also point In these events. Wootton should get t'llrd plnce in the quarter-mile. quarter-mile. The Amlcl Fidlsslme will bid strongly fpr tho quarter-mllo with Bobbv Flacel the varsity 440-yard star, while in the hurdles they should lake ten points with Frankle Hurlbut. This leaves more than half the points to be divided among dark-horse athletes, and the &lgma Chi boys say thoy will be ready to offer a number of surprises. |
