Show mum business HAS BRIGHTOUTLDDK S. V. Norton, manager of the truck tire talcs of the B. F. Goodrich company, has just returned from the east, after having read a paper on the subject of truck tires before the January mooting of the Motor Truck Club of America In New York City. After leaving New York Mr. Norton went to Boston, where he hold a conference confer-ence with the Goodrich New Busland representatives. S'ald Mr. Norton: I am much pleased with tho situation situa-tion in Boston eo far as prospects for sales of truck tires are concerned. We havo placed a number of additional soleomon In tho field to take care of the increased number of trucks running run-ning there. Tho New England territory ter-ritory seems to be different from any other section of the country, inasmuch in-asmuch as apart from tho city of Boston, there are no largo concentrated concen-trated districts in which motor trucks are used. With Boston us a centor, however, tho trucks are spread out in a sort of suburbnn community within a radius of 150 miles, where they aro used not only for short hauls, hut for lnterurban hauls, ranging from 50 to 100 mile. It has been most Interesting to me to learn the various ways In which truck manufacturers nnd their representatives arc improving the sen-Ice given to owners, of their , trucks. For instance, realizing tho Importance of well-trained, experienced experi-enced drivers, one company In Boston has established a drivers' school. In which young men arc given a thorough thor-ough training In the care and operation opera-tion of their trucks. These men are guaranteed po<lons after they satisfactorily sat-isfactorily complete the course of instruction in-struction required In this school, which consists of learning the de- . tolls of construction, as well as everything ev-erything In connection with the operation oper-ation of this particular make of truck. " A3 this school Is conducted In a very practical manner, the drivers have unusual opportunities Tor learning learn-ing how to care for trucks. The i agent who conducts this Fchool ! mokes a strong point of his ability to keep in continuous service tho trucks oporaled in his territory. Sup-nose, Sup-nose, for Instance, that a truck belonging be-longing to one of his customers has I mot with somo accldnnt, such as may I happen to any machine on the road. The driver of the truck sends a call for help to this agency. A similar truck is Immediately dispatched to the scone of the accident, In charge of an experienced driver accompanied bv Hevoral of tho young men in the drivers' school. This affords the studunta an opportunity to learn what has caused tho trouble. Tho disabled truck Is cither ropuh-cd or its merchandise Is transferred to the service truck with a minimum of d-lay, d-lay, and the goods aro Immediately sent on their way. The student drivers have learned how to cope with a now situation, while tho owner own-er of the truck in distress has received re-ceived valuable assistance, which haa enabled him to continue the service for which his truck was purchased. |
