I The silver annivorBary dinner of tho TJnivorsity o.lub was celebrated in an elaborate manner at the clubhouse last niriifc by more than 100 members of the club. The members of the club ipinod the celebration of tho twonty-iifth an-nivorfary an-nivorfary of their olub with tho celebration cele-bration of tho J82d birthday of George ThoJmafc birthday celebration began with an elaborato banquet. After a delicious meal thero wero a numbor o addresses- "Willinm W. Armstrong, president of the University club, was the toaa,tniastcr. Addresses wore delivered de-livered by Frank B Stephens, tho Rov. Elmer I." Goshen and Dr. H. M. Mayo, and extemporaneous remarks were mado bv C. E. Alien. George N. Jjawrence, Harrv Battm, W. Mont Perry and W. A. Wilson. Mx. Stephens responded to the toast. "The Future of the Club." Ho said that in tie future the club would become be-come moTfi and more a force for good in the community. The club, Mr. Stephens Ste-phens said, should be a great factor m the encouragement of higher education, and in tho support of the local board of education and the state university. As a power in the civic affairs in the community, regardless of politics, tho University club, ho said, would always rank high. He Jooked forward to the dav when tho club would have an enrollment en-rollment of 1000 members. m In -a patriotic and inspiring address, the Eov. Mr. Goshen responded to tho toast, " George Washington, Hib Hatchet and His Flag." "With brilliant eloquence tho Bpeaker eulogized the father fa-ther of his country. He said that Washington wa3 too ideal of American Ameri-can citizenship and Amorican patriotism patriot-ism and his high ideal would ever be a source of inspiration to the American Ameri-can patriot. The birthday anniversary of the club is always tho "Arabian Ufight" of the organization, so to Dr. H. ft. Mayo was assigned tho toast, "An Arabian Night." Dr: Mayo said the little alcohol alco-hol lamp of the laboratory was the Aladdin b lamp of most of the members t of the University club, Arabian poetry was discussod by tho speaker. and he closed by quoting Kipling's " Vampire.' Vam-pire.' 1 After the toastmasfcor had called upon up-on a number of speakers for extemporaneous extempo-raneous talks, the celebration became informal. The member sang their college col-lege songs, fought over old football battles and drank toasts to tho twonty-five-year-old club and the 182-year-old Washington. |
