HUNTSVILLE, Ark., Feb. 21. A man 50 years old, giving the name of Edward Stuart, was arrested hero today to-day and a girl dressed as a boy was put undor tho protection of Sheriff M. H. Shuster in the belief that she is Catherine Winters, daughter of Dr. "W. A.Winters, missing from her home at Newcastle, Ind., since last March. The girl, according to the sheriff, says her namo is Catherine "Winters, and that she formerly lived in a town in Indiana, the name of which she cannot remember. Disconnectedly she tells of a trip in an automobilo and later a journey in a wagon. Tho man. the sheriff says, has mado contradictory statements, at one time doclaring the girl is Dr. Winters 's daughter and later declaring she is his own child. Dr. Winters is expected at Fort Smith tomorrow to meet tho pair. Stuart's arrest aud the detention of tho girl came through citizens who wero struck by the resemblance of the child to pictures of Catherine Winters printed print-ed in a Fort Smith newspaper. Since Monday the pair hav traveled in the vicinity of Huntsvillo in a wagon. Last night citizens determined to seek tho couplo and make further investigation. in-vestigation. Tho wagon and its occupants occu-pants were found a short distanco away in the hills. Tho replies of Stuart did not satisfy the investigators, wno marched him. and tho girl back to Huntsville and notified the sheriff. Stuart was placed in nail urL the child was taken to the Hueriff;3 home. Stuart insists that ho did not kidnap kid-nap tho girl, according to Sheriff Shus-tor, Shus-tor, but says tho man who did abduct the girl gave her into his keeping. Tho sheriff assorts tho child say6 thiB is true. Stuart said he had proparod to driyo back to Indiana and had remainod in tho vicinity of Huntsvillo becauso it was quiet and out of the way. |
