Inspite of television and video games, people are buying more books, and Marie Nicholson has most of them at Sam Weller's. Love of Reading Continues "People are buying more books. Inspite of television, recession, VCR's and video games, our book sales are up," states Marie Nicholson, Nichol-son, manager of Sam Weller's Books in the 5-Points shopping center. "For awhile the video games cut sales to young people down. These customers have discovered they need mind food not just entertainment." SAM WELLER'S Books is well-equipped to service anyone wanting to buy a book. Mrs. Nicholson says this store has the best selection of books in Davis County. "We can pull from the stock in the Salt Lake store if we need to. Used books can be ordered through us from the Sam Weller store in Salt Lake. We have arrangements with publishers to special order. This service isn't, offered by many book stores," Mrs. Nicholson claims. The store owner's philosophy is to have a varied selection of books and to stock several books on each subject. THE INVENTORY in the Bountiful store is about equally divided between paper backs and hardback volumes. There is a good selec tion of religious books including current and used LDS titles. Inexpensive paperbacks for children and teens are very popular. Girls still prefer romances and teenage boys read mostly science fiction. Students find the Cliff notes selections very helpful when preparing school assignments. There is a trend towards buying paperback books. These can be produced cheaper. Nearly Near-ly all classical literature and most best-selling novels are now printed in paperback form. Mrs. Nicholson says a paperback is the best buy if you want a fiction book to read only occasionally. If you want a often-used handbook hand-book or reference book, then a hard cover is the best purchase. ONE VERY noticeable service you receive . when you visit Sam Weller's Books is the courteous cour-teous service you get from the employees. Each one seems to know just what is available in the store, where it can be located and what you can expect to receive from the book. Mrs. Nicholson says it isn't a hard process to learn about the store's inventory. "You find what is in stock by dusting the shelves and by re- shelving books. It isn't unusual to take a few minutes to read the fly leaf and to glance : through a book before returning it to the shelf. ; Once you have done this, the book is committed commit-ted to memory. We also learn a lot about our inventory by looking up titles in our ordering : catalogs." The best qualification for a book store employee em-ployee is a love of reading. Mrs. Nicholson has enjoyed reading since childhood. She started working for Sam Weller several years ago. Two construction workers told her they were building shelves for a new book store that was going to open in 5-Points. Mrs. Nicholson de-cided de-cided this would be a good job. She applied through the Sam Weller Salt Lake store and was hired. At first, she worked in Salt Lake. ' When the Bountiful stOTe opened' Mrs.' Nicholson transferred to the new store. She has been the store manager for about two years. MRS. NICHOLSON and her employees ', claim they don't spend their entire salary buying books from the store. "We do give ; books for Christmas presents frequently," she says smiling. |
