Show Life After Basketball Crown By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports WOODS CROSS -- The big question at Woods Cross this spring is can there be life after a state basketball championship? WELL IN the case of the players there certainly cer-tainly is as all of them have gone to their various va-rious spring sports. Todd Robinson and Scott Longson are now playing soccer, Race McCTeery, Todd Dyson and Troy Cullimore are now playing baseball while Greg Houskecper is involved in track. AS SOON AS the weather gives the Cats a break they'll get a better indication of just how well their spring sports will do this year but right now the big winner in all the sports has been Mother Nature. Here is a quick capsule look at the spring sports for the Cats with more in-depth previews pre-views to follow in the upcoming weeks. BASEBALL. ..Val Cullimore is entering his fifth year as the head man for the Cats and he indicates things look good for this year, if.. ."Our pitching needs to come through. Pitching is a big part of baseball especially on the high school level. If our pitchers come around then I believe we'll be good" he noted. A year ago the Cats tied with Viewmont and Last for the final slate berth and a playoff situation situa-tion developed. The Cats beat Fast but then had to turn right around and play the Vikes, which they lost. ON THE bright side of things the Cats do have their top two hitters from a year ago back this season. Seniors Todd Dyson, the catcher, and senior second baseman Chad Hammond were the big guns for the Cats al the plate a year ago and both of them will see plenty of action this year. Also back from a year ago as starters are Race McCleery at first, Mike Dalley in the infield and outfielder Troy Cullimore along with Troy Fuller who plays just about anywhere. any-where. Thus far the Cats have been able to play West Jordan, the Cats won 5-3, and Layton which they also defeated 7-6. SOCCER. ..The soccer program is alive and well despite losing a lot of graduating seniors off of last year's state championship team. The Cats have a very young squad, they start up to six sophomores in the varsity game, and as a result their inexperience has hurt them but they are improving with each outing. Thus far they lost to Cottonwood 3-2 and then tied with Orem I-1. COACH KEVIN Rigby has several players back from a year ago to bolster the team with the leader being Kurt Dyches one of the best strikers in the state. Keith Prows also returns in the defense along with Sergio at a halfback. One of the big changes this year is the fact the Wildcats will play all of their home games : under their lights on the football field. That is as soon as the weather allows them. TRACK AND FIELD.. .Vertis Anderson is back in the fold after missing coaching a year ago due to a back operation and he's optimistic about several individuals on the team. Coach Anderson points to junior Lance Eden as a top point getter in both the discus and the shot, along with senior Ken Finsher. Brad Lynn is back as top sprinter for Woods Cross while they boast Larry Richardson. Darren Dar-ren Tuttle, Richard Paul and Ken Jones in the longer races. THEN THE coach is happy over the progress prog-ress of Greg Houskeeper in the high jump. "We don't have the depth to compete with some of these other schools but we do have some top individuals that should do well in the meets" the coach offered. |
