Show ft Arbor I&y: Trees Have Great Yalai Arbor Day, April 22 in Utah, mark it on your calendar. Set it aside to pay homage to trees and to encourage respect for a wholesome environment. As a citizen, plant a tree to perpetuate perpetu-ate and conserve a wonderful resource, suggests Carl M. Johnson, extension forester, Utah State University. HE REMINDS that Arbor Day had its humble beginning in 1872, J. Sterling Morton, who later became Secretary of Agriculture, succeeded in getting get-ting his home state of Nebraska Nebras-ka to pass a resolution designating desig-nating the first Arbor Day. "As you take part in Arbor Day activities, planting trees to beautify your yards to create cre-ate more attractive surroundings, surround-ings, consider dedicating those trees to the birth of a child, to commemorating some anniversary, birthday or some important family event," Johnson advised. "YOU MIGHT donate a tree as a living memorial to departed de-parted friends or relatives," he added. He suggests that churches, schools, scout troops, 4-H Clubs, neighborhood associations associa-tions and communities use Arbor Day for advancing needed landscaping projects. Interested citizens including club groups, members, alumni or others might donate the trees or provide gift certificates certifi-cates for their purchase. MANAGERS of apartment complexes, office buildings and commercial firms might sponsor lunch-hoir Arbor Day ceremonies involving the people peo-ple who live or work there. Johnson maintains that this activity would provide a more personal attachment to the surroundings, sur-roundings, reduce landscape vandalism and costs of maintenance mainte-nance and replacement. "Each planting, whether it be a single tree or a group of trees should be part of an overall over-all well planned program of beautification," Johnson said. "ALL TOO often a tree is planted in a spot with much fanfare, only to die because no one was really in charge of maintaining the tree." "Blue spruce, our official state tree, makes a good Arbor Day choice. Several other evergreens also do well in Utah including Rocky Moun- P" Johnson .
