Show Davis Taxpayers Gettimg Slower I By GARY R. BLODGETT FARMINGTON -- It may be the tight economy, but whatever the reason Davis County property owners are becoming more and more delinquent de-linquent in the payment of their taxes. THAT'S THE word from county officials who noted that an increasing number of home owners are delinquent in the payment of their real estate taxes. County tax rolls, it was explained, ex-plained, have grown to such proportions that the delinquency delin-quency list now totals more than $2.3 million for the past five years. HOW DOES this affect the cities which get a proportinale share of the tax money from the county? Moncywise, Layton is suf fering the worst while still waiting for about $44,()(K) in last year's (1982) taxes. Bountiful Boun-tiful is still in the hole by about $41,700; Clearfield is in the red by nearly $20, 0(H); Farmington is lacking $16,000; and Center-ville Center-ville is still waiting for about $10,480. BUT IT'S the smaller cities that are really feeling the bile, according to County Treasurer Pauline M c 13 ride . Even though they may not get as much in total funds, they rely more on the tax money they do receive. She said the delinquency list has increased yearly and now that the information is on computer com-puter the picture is vivid and nottoobrght. In 1982, the non-paying non-paying tax list oaled more than 3, (MX). ALONG WITH delinquent tax payments is the increasing ivi ami.1 jtJH'wwuiMWffl JW mi number of properties being sold to pay for back taxes, Ms. McBride noted. She said nearly near-ly 100 properties will be sold to the highest bidder at a public auction on May 25. Property owners have a 5-ycar 5-ycar "grace period" in which to pay (delinquent) taxes. "AND SOME property owners, own-ers, for one reason or another take advantage of this and don't pay taxes until their property is about to be placed on the auction block," she said, noting that one south Davis property owner is delinquent delin-quent by live years ad owes about $100,000 in back taxes. Also atop the delinquent list are building contractors and subdivides who "hit hard times in recent years" and have not been able to pay their taxes. .OTHERS surprise y she said, "they aP'W moncv but cither ha J up in investments and . icon the interest or ' money for other pu while delaying their U P j? nienls." 1 1 Hut she cautions ihS. high interest rale and for laic payments -so ii- . to pay on time. |
