Show Attic Fire Uncovers World Warll Bombs By CHERIE HUBER 295-6169 A fire Sunday night in Centerville Cen-terville had the South Davis Fire Department calling in ordinance personnel from Fort Douglas and evacuating the area. A FIRE WAS reported in a private residence at about 6 p.m. Sunday night on 400 East near the Centerville South Stake Center. When firemen answered the call they found an electrical fire in the attic. The fire was put out after doing only $2,000 worth of damage, but while firemen were checking check-ing the attic for hot spots one of the firement came across a 3.5 inch bazooka rocket. The firemen immediately evacuated the attic and the house. The area was cleared and the ordinance personnel were called at Ft. Douglas. When the rocket was described de-scribed to them a shell looking look-ing like a World War II bomb about 15 inches long with a bullet-like nose and fins they identified it over the phone as a bazooka shell and they warned that if the shell should explose it could scatter debris and schrapnel over a 50-meter area. WHILE WAITING for the ordinance men from Ft. Douglas Doug-las to arrive, II homes in the area were evacuated and fire equipment and spectators were moved back a block from the house. After the crew from Ft. Douglas came out and looked at the shell they called it a dummy dum-my round without a firing pin. However, the shell could have exploded if the fire had reached it. THE HOME IS a rental unit and it is unclear at this time who the rocket belonged to. |
