A preliminary study which was reported in the "New England En-gland Journal of Medicine" last spring showed the experimental ex-perimental drug, commonly used in diet medication, had a significant efTecl on the social and intellectual functioning of three autistic boys. Since that time, the drug has been administered admi-nistered experimentally to autistic au-tistic persons throughout the country. Other presentors include in-clude .Martha Bridge Denckla, M.D., Chief, Section on Autism, Aut-ism, of the National Institute of Neurological Communicative Communica-tive Disease and Stroke. ALTISM, a condition once considered to be caused by inadequate in-adequate parenting, is now know n to be a neurological disorder. dis-order. This disability severely impairs the way sensory input is processed, causing problems prob-lems in communication, social behavior and in learning. It typically appears during the first thirty months of life. Sy mptoms of Autism occur in approximately 15 out of every ev-ery 10,000 births, and are four times more common in males than females. It has been found throughout the world in families fami-lies of all racial, ethnic and social so-cial backgrounds. No factors in the psychological environment environ-ment of a child hav ben shown to cause Autism. Research is taking place in the filds of neurology and biochemistry. PRESENTATIONS at the conference will focus on current cur-rent research in effective educational edu-cational techniques for educating educat-ing these children. Parents, educators, and the interested public are invited to attend.
