ODA IS a member of 1 firm that contracts with the I J ounty to be public defenders 'Or the indigent. He had taken "apartner in a capital offense PI ase he is working on, but when he submitted the billing for his partner it was refused. The billing totaled $1200 at a rate of $35 an hour. Last Wednesday the commission voted not to approve payment for services up to that time but to authorize Atty. Oda to contract con-tract for help at $35 per hour not to exceed $1200 from this point on in the case. AT THE SAME time Atty. Oda objected to having his billing bill-ing approved by the county attorney because he felt that the hours he spent on the case might give the county attorney knowledge of what he is doing on the case. The commission however determined that Atty. Oda's billing in general in nature and the county attorney could not determine from the billing where the hours are being spent even if he wanted to. At the same time the County Commission has made incentive incen-tive awards to two road shop employees, Del Singleton and Mr. Belnap. Both received $300 incentive awards because of the money they have saved the county. MR. SINGLETON saved the county $12,000 by suggesting suggest-ing that the road shop trucks be converted to propane. Mr. Belnap saved the county coun-ty $11,000 when he found and replaced a diesel engine in one of the county trucks. It would have cost an estimated $ 1 1 ,000 to repair the engine that Mr. Belnap replaced for $500. THESE INCENTIVE awards are part of an ongoing county program to encourage interest in saving county money. |
