Show ! I High Fiber Lifestyles Enjoy Better Health Nutritional lifestyles high in dietary fiber are known to contribute to health and fitness. Certain dietary fibers fi-bers have been found to lower cholesterol, favorable influence diabetes, and reduce the incidence of lower wlon cancer. Now two more studies seem to indicate that the beneficial effects of fiver are even more wide ; ranging. j THE FIRST STUDY addressed the old idea that ' "leers respond better and recur less frequently when the diet is low in fiber and almost entirely bland According to the report (Lancet, Sept. 4, 1982), a total J of 73 patients with recently healed duidenal ulcers were . ated. One group was placed on a diet high in fiber 'breads rich in fiber; porridge made of wheat, barley, fye, or oat flour; lots of vegetables), and the other group - w.as given a low fiber diet. Both groups stayed on their diets for six months. ' , The results? Ulcers came back to torment 80 percent . " of 'he low-fiber group, while only 45 percent of the high fiber group had recurring problems. As the authors conclude "A diet rich in fiber might prevent relapse of duodenal ulceration." At least it's worth a try. ANOTHER INTERESTING study was recorded in Zutphen (pop 25,000), Netherlands, where the lives and habits of 871 middle-aged men were followed for a ten year period. During that time 107 of the men died from all causes, with 37 deaths due to heart disease and 44 from cancer. According to the researchers, "Men with a low intake in-take of dietary fiber had a three times higher risk of death from all causes than men with a high fiber intake. And the risk of death declined with increasing intake of fiber." THE BOTTOM line, again, is the predominance of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your nutritional lifestyle. That's where the fiber is found and, in addition, addi-tion, the nutrient density is high; that is, you get lots of nutrients without getting too many calories. 1 -1 rirjr.rji |
