Show Freak Happening at Golf Course It would be nearly impossible to calculate the odds on the likelihood of two golf balls, hit from separate tees on opposite holes to, collide in mid-air. The figure would be astronomical. But it happened. And it happened Saturday Afternoon at the Painted Hills Golf Course in Cedar City during the two-man Best Ball Tournament. Course pro Gale Parcell reported that a ball hit by Val Peterson from the No. 5 tee-a par five with a dog leg to the left around a knolI--and a ball teed of on number six by Charlie Brazier-a Dar four hole parellel to number five for a portion of the distance-actually met in mid-air during the course of the tournament play. The knoll makes it impossible to see other tee further complicating the possibilities involved. It was estimated that both drives were between 200 and 220 yards and they collided on their way down about 10 feet above the ground. One of the two balls dropped into the rough, according to an observer, David Wright, "the other ball kicked off to the left in the fairway," Wright said. Several of the golfers participating in the tournament w itnessed the unusual event, but even Parcell, was unable to give a ruling on the incident. The odds on such an occurance would be an interesting research for some enterprising mathmatician. "But don't ask me all the variables involved," in-volved," Parcell commented. ".lust believe us that it happened. It beats the (Kids on a hole in one by a long shot," he concluded. |
