Show Higbee attends national confab , I J US- I Two women involved in local day care programs recently attended a National Conference on Campus Child Care held in San Francisco. Virginia Higbee, Coordinator Coor-dinator of Volunteer Support Services for the Southern Utah State College School of . Continuing Education, and Donna Petersen, Director of the Escalante Valley Day Care Center in Beryl, were among the 125 persons involved in-volved in the national conference. "A major thrust in day care now is on nurturing-providing nurturing-providing the children with a lot of love and affection-rather affection-rather than on schooling," Mrs. Higbee said. "This makes the day care situation more of an extension of the home rather than a preschool pre-school type program." During the three-day conference the Iron County participants attended ten workshops dealing with aspects of day care such as funding, parent relations, possible summer programs, legal aspects, and programs involving infants. Mrs. Higbee said that the SUSC Campus Nursery School is funded through VIRGINIA HIGBEE Title XX, and is primarily for lower income families and for children of students. Of the 28 three and four-year olds enrolled in the program, approximately 70 percent are children of SUSC students. The Escalante Valley Day Care Center is in operation during the annual potato harvest. At various times during the season, up to 100 children, ages 0-6, are taken care of at the center. |
