The results of a World Championship Dutch Oven Cooking Contest May 2 will either prove or disprove this contention. Sponsored by Southern Utah State College, under the able arm of dutch oven enthusiast Ken Benson, the World Championship will be held on conjunction with Wild West activities at SUSC. The actual contest will be held at Thunderbird Gardens-northeast of the Painted Hills Golf Course-during Course-during the annual Prospector's Party hosted by the LDSSA. Actual cooking time will begin at 5 p.m. The contest is open to anyone, any age, and will be conducted on a team basis. "A team can consist of anywhere between one and three people," Richard A. Dotson, contest director and cooking contestant, said. Contestants must bring their own dutch ovens and materials for sourdough COMPETITION SLATED. Dutch ovens come in all sizes. If you're up to competing against the pros, you're invited to try your hand in the World Championship Dutch Oven Cooking Contest May 2, sponsored by SUSC. biscuits or bread, a dessert, and whatever spices or secret ingredients they may want to use for a stew. The meat, potatoes, and carrots for the stew will be supplied. "All contestants must cook throe dishes--the stew, sourdough bread, and a dessert-and must be able to feed five people," Dotson said. "Each sourdough start must be at least a week old, and no commerical yeast may be used," Dotson said. "In keeping things pure, no artificial form of heat can be used such as gasoline or electricity." Cooking contestants can pick up an official list of rules and regulations at Benson's office in the SUSC Student Center. All hopefuls must check in with Benson by May 1. "So far, we've got about seven teams signed up for the contest," Dotson said. "Of course we expect the title to stay in southern Utah where the best cooks reside." |
