Qualify for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Con-ference tournament; 2. Win all three games against Mesa College; 3. Continue a two-game winning streak. The T-Birds will host arch rival Mesa College for three games beginning Friday (1 p.m.) with a single contest. A double-header starting at noon Saturday on the campus field will finish the series. SUSC needs only to win one of the three games to qualify for the RMAC tournament May 4-6 in Pueblo, Colorado. In Grand Junction, SUSC swept the Mavericks 6-2, 10-6 and 5-1. "They will be ready for us this time," states Coach Cleo Petty. "We are going to have to play our best baseball of the season." Petty's T-Birds are in the midst of a five-game losing streak against the likes of Grand Canyon College and Northern Arizona University. Univer-sity. "Those are two outstanding out-standing teams,"; says Petty. "I've never seen any team hit the ball like Northern Nor-thern Arizona." Petty will probably throw right-hander Jed Murray (2-4) (2-4) Friday, and right-hander Garn Jorgensen (3-0) and lefty Roy Jewkes (1-2) Saturday. All three picked up victories in Grand Junction. He is followed by second baseman Ivan Otero (.338), catcher Warren Hatch (.313), shortstop Danny Nuttall (.310), and center fielder-catcher John Borla (.303). Left fielder Tony Pappas leads the 'Birds "in home runs (3), doubles (6), and sluigging percentage (.600). Piatt and Nuttall lead SUSC in RBI's with 14 runs batted in each. Nuttall set a school record with his five for five batting performance in the opening game of the series against Northern Arizona. His hits included a grand slam home run and a double. SUSC hosts Western Athletic Conference power Brigham Young Tuesday. |
