Delta nabbed its seventh straight title with 124"2 points. Millard placed second at 80 counters, and Wasatch netted third place honors at 76 points. Union garnered fourth place with 70'2 counters. Lehi placed fifth at 69 points. Two Cougars, Brian Hamilton, 132 and Frank Winn, 155, captured second place titles. Hamilton was defeated by Robert Tsosie of Millard due to a referee's decision. Tsosie nabbed a takedown in the first round, and Hamilton was awarded two stalling points in the third round to force the match into overtime. The match was tied at 0-0 after three overtimes. "It was a split decision on the referee's decision. Brian slipped and fell as he was going for the takedown, and Tsosie was able to get the takedown in the first round," stated Union coach, Dennis Toland. Hamilton toppled a wrestler from Moab, 7-1, in the first round and blanked the Delta tussler, 2-0, in the second round. Zane Pentz of Morgan, a defending state champ, decisioned Frank Winn of Union, 10-2, for the 155 pound crown. Winn nabbed a reversal in the second round, which cut Pentz' lead to 4-2. Winn nipped Hummell of Richfield, 5-4, in the first round and blanked a Delta wrestler, 4-0, in the second round. Steve Gault, 126, pocketed third place due to a superior decision win. Farrell McCook, 98, garnered third place when he defeated Ron Paulson of North Sanpete on a superior decision. John Brown, 145, lost a 3-2 decision to Hunt sman from Emery and placed fourth. Anthon Nelson, 185, nabbed fourth place when he was nipped by Pat Sullivan of Wasatch, 2-1. "Nelson scored an escape in the third round, and was turning Sullivan for a takedown, but before he could get control, the third round buzzer sounded," said Dennis Den-nis Toland. John Brown's opponent gained the takedown in the first round and nabbed a neutral for a 3-0 lead in the second round. Brown garnered a reversal in the third round. Union's heavyweight wrestler, Danny Farnsworth, pinned a wrestler from Richfield in the first round, but was defeated by Ryan Western, Delta, 7-1 and lost to McFarlend, Manti, 5-0. "The tourney was really close," said Toland. "If we could have won a few more matches we would have placed second." Duchesne High School tied for sixth place in the 1-A State Tournament with North Sevier at 63 points South Summit placed first at 96'i points, and Wayne netted second at 88H counters. North Summit nabbed third at 82 points, and Gunnison placed, fourth at 71'. Mon-ticello Mon-ticello picked up fifth place honors with 71 points. Mike Mazenen, Duchesne, placed first in the 126 pound class. Mezenen defeated Ted Prescott of South Summit. David Wilkinson, Duchesne, 98 and Robert Nielsen, 145, Duchesne, pocketed third places. Wilkinson downed down-ed Ronnie Musselman of Monticello, and Nielsen defeated Marty Jensen of Piute. Darren Ercanbrack, 119, Duchesne, placed fourth and Steve Hanke, Altamont, 185, nabbed fourth place. |
