However, Hacking recovered with4en-point ex- ' plosion in the second round for a 10-6 advantage, ad-vantage, which included a couple of near falls. Hacking was in complete control of the match in the third round and he finally pinned Welch with 27 seconds left in the contest. The Utes gained their third championship cham-pionship when sophomore, Randy Smuin, decisioned Steve Whitworth of Cyprus, 7-3, for the 145 pound title. The match was tied at 0-0 after one round, but Smuin pocketed two escapes and a takedown for a 4 to 1 lead in the second round. Smuin added a three-point near fall in the third round, and went on to win the match, 7 to 3. Smuin pinned Tooele's Terry Green in the first round. Uintah pocketed its fourth and final first place crown when Ken Cobbs, heavyweight, pinned Cyprus' Jed Ogden in the third round. Ogden nabbed the takedown in the first round for a 2-0 lead, but Cobbs gained a reversal and a three-point near fall for a 5-2 advantage. advan-tage. Cobbs added a reversal and a near fall in the second round for a 10-4 lead, and ended the match when he pinned pin-ned Ogden in the third round. Cobbs also toppled Tooele's Ty Outzen, 11-2. Jeff Good, 119, used a 6-3 decision to defeat Frank Lucero of Cyprus, but Kye Jensen of Tooele won the 119 pound crown due to a 6-3 decision win over Jeff Good. Good pocketed a 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first round, but Jensen grabbed an escape and a takedown for a 3-2 advantage. Jensen added a neutral and a takedown in the second round, and Good gained a penalty point in the third round. Kay Smuin, 155, blanked Craig Tate of Tooele, 7-0, but he was pinned by Jordan's Jor-dan's Mike Meldrum in the championship champion-ship match, and finished in second place. Meldrum garnered a 4-0 lead when he gained a takedown and a two-point two-point near fall, but Smuin grabbed a 5-4 advantage when he reversed Meldrum and gained a three-point near fall. Smuin nabbed an escape for a two-point lead of 6-4, but Meldrum dropped Smuin for a takedown and pinned his Uintah opponent in the second round. The Utes' Art Daley nipped Jack Cochrane of Tooele, 4-2, but was pinned in the first round by Scott Brown of Murray in the 185 pound championship match. Ron Horrocks, 105, pocketed third place when he toppled Wes Holman of Murray, 9-2. Billy Bedell, 167, earned third place honors when he nipped John Morales of Cyprus, 5-3. Bedell was nipped by Doug Koehly of Tooele, 4-2, in the second round and pinned Murray's John Fabela. Cory McNeill, 126 and Allen Huber, 132, competed in the tournament, but did not place. McNeill was pinned by Ron awdrey of Murray in the first round, and was nipped by Brad Densley of Jordan, 6-J. Huber was edged by Scott Gessell of Jordan, 4 2. and was downed by Murray's Dwayne Haskell. 3-2. |
