Show Manila Clara Robinson Phone 784-3463' Susie Cook best speller Susie Cook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Cook is all over best speller for grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. She was winner at the Deseret News Spelling Bee held at the Manila High School on Wednesday, February 6. She is not eligible to enter the State Spelling Bee in Salt Lake City, Utah. Gail Despain was coordinator for the spelling bee. Judges were Luch Conant, Mar Gean Campbell, and Damon Palmer. Those assisting with the written tests were Gerald Erickson, Judy Harris, Tina Potter, Fred Weeks and Shelley Bernard. Participating after having been chosen from their classes in each school were Tina Elmer, Bevin Briggs, Dann Mc-Meekan, Mc-Meekan, Roxanne Radosevich, Danny Mullins, Ranae Harris, Eric Maloy, Marcie Briggs, Baryl Bernard, Kenneth Ken-neth Thompson, Matt Weeks, Troy Sadlier, Rhonda Sandquist, Juelia Erickson, Tonya Payne, Susie Cook, Starla Despain Natalie Radosevich, and Becky Barber. Class roll trophies were won by the following: 4th grade-Roxanne .Radosevich, 5th grade-Erich Maloy, 6th grade-Matt Weeks, 7th grade-Susie Cook, and 8th grade-Natalie Radosevich. Second overall winner was Matt Weeks. The Daggett County Sheriff's Office investigated two burglaries and one theft this week. Two businesses in Manila suffered losses totaling over $2,000 and one business in Dutch John suffered losses but the dollar value for that one is unknown. Finger prints were found on one of I ie ."lefts in Manila. Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Potter of Seattle were in Manila this past weekend for the funeral of Weldon's grandfather Curtis Slaugh. Robert Ellsworth was home from USU in Logan, Utah this weekend. The snow has been cleaned from the Manila Elementary School pond and it is to be flooded again. There was a special reason this time as one of the candidates for the Sweetheart Ball is using ice skating as her talent. Daggett County Board of Director for the Aging have recinded a former vote to purchase a pooltable for the Senior Citizen Center and voted to order a refrigerator which they feel is more important. Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Daggett Senior Citizen's enjoyed a fish dinner at the Senior Citizen Center, Afterward they played Bingo. .The Tfl & L Homemaker's Club Valentine Party will be at the Senior Citizen Center on February 21. This is an annual event. Cards will be played and other games are planned for those who do not wish to play cards or Bingo. Two public hearings are bing held in Daggett County concerning "Strengthening American Families" on February 14. One will be held at the Dutch John Recreation Center at 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. The other will be at the Daggett County Courthouse from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Thursday at 7:30 p.m. is town council meeting at the Senior Citizen Center. Temperatures fell below zero for 3 nights in a row last week with 8 degrees below zero being the lowest on the night of Fehruary 9. This reading was on February 10 at 5 p.m. The highest temperature was on Monday, Feb. 4 when it was 45 degrees above zero. There was.no moisture in Manila until Feb. 7 when 4 inches of snow fell bringing .29 of an inch of moisture. High and low temperatures for the week were as follows: Feb. 4-high 45, low 37; Feb. 5-high 36, low 13; Feb. 6-high 6-high 33, low 14; Feb. 7-high 33, low 22; Feb. 8-high 24, low-3, Feb. 9-high 19, low -4; Feb. 10-high 30, low -8. Funeral services were held at Manila LDS Chapel on Saturday, Feb. 9, for Curtis Slaugh 85, who passed away at a nursing home in Idaho Falls last Tuesday. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home of Green River, Wyoming. Bishop Deri Reed officiated. Family prayer preceeding the funeral was given by Marvin Brady. Speakers were Weldon Potter, Donald Larsen and Curtis Peterson. A song, "I Need Thee Every Hour" was sung by Peggy Peterson and her daughter Natalie, and "Somewhere My Love" was sung by WaNata Lamb. Both songs were accompanied ac-companied by Terrie Lamb at the piano. Benediction was by Layne Potter. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were grandsons. Burial was in Vernal. A family dinner was provided for the family before they returned home. Garth Atwood dedicated the grave. ' Curtis i Slaugh was trorrrlh Verna'dn . November 10, 1894. He was the son of John Jacob and Mary Alice Perry Slaugh. On September 8, 1913, he married Chloa Roberts in Vernal. This marriage was solemnized the the Salt Lake LDS Temple on October 2, 1925. Mr. and Mrs. Slaugh moved to the Manila area in 1921, and have lived here since. He belonged to the LDS Church. He is survived by his wife who still lives in Manila, two sons Wesley and Myron of Manila; 4 daughters, Mrs. Orvel (Relva) Potter of Manila, Mrs. Shirley (Virgie) Peterson and Mrs. Leon (Sybil) Brady of Green River, Wyoming, Mrs. Loe (Arva) Slagowski of Idaho Falls, Idaho. One son, Marvin, passed away in 1919; one brother William Slaugh of Vernal; two sisters, Bessie Atwood of Canada and Leona McConkie of Vernal; 33 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. |
