Show Disappointed in legislature Attn. Glade Sowards: As a strong Republican I am very disappointed at the action of the State Legislature during the recent session. In 1978, we overwhelmingly supported those Republicans that promised the the passage of constitutional amendments amend-ments putting ceilings on government at all levels. Yet when you fellows got down there you let powerful adverse interests in-terests such as school officials, mayors, commissioners, etc. frighten you into not passing what we voted you fellows in for. In effect taxpayers only have one lobby, the ballot and that, only every two years and if you renege on your responsibilities because of pressures, then it is wrong. The power to tax is the power to destroy. Why were not raises for State employees and the elected bureaucrats held to 7 percent. Do you realize that in about 8 years, a clerk typist will be making about $40,000 a year and the Governor over $100,000. The Governor did not need an increase. You just gave him a free mansion to live in, free car allowances and I imagine im-agine an outrageous travel allowance. Right now we need a strong Republican to run against Matheson. He has got the people of Utah fooled and is probably our biggest spender we ever had in office. of-fice. You said your votes were a vote of confidence in local officials. These local officials are so power hungry they will tax us to the death if no restraint is put on them, whether they are Republicans or Democrats. It just about shakes your belief in a democratic system of government. I am writing you because Leland and Glen Sowards were among my best friends and I know how Leland would feel about an inflation run-away legislature. I taught school for about five years it was the easiest job I ever had. I could have handled twice the workload without any trouble let's get some economy in government-not continual con-tinual increases. We are not children to be taken care of from the cradle to the grave as people in office and the bureaucrats seem to think. In fact the common citizen is a lot smarter than most bureaucrats. Very truly yours, J. Wayland Mattsson, Ogden, a former Vernal resident I bet my good friend Francis Feltch feels like I do. |
