Ten Uffe dossiers o beitle in 3-A Sae Tounrieimenfl The Uintah High School Utes will battle strong wrestling teams from Pleasant Grove, Box Elder, Davis, West, Woods Cross, Springville, Jordan and Cyprus, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the 3-A State Tournament in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah. Ten Uintah Utes will compete in the state tournament. Uintah pocketed four first place crowns, Brett Brown, 98; Matt Hacking, 138; Randy Smuin, 145 and Ken Cobbs, heavyweight, in the Region 7 Tournament. Foston Chivers, 112; Jeff Good, 119; Kay Smuin, 155 and Art Daley, 185, nabbed second places, and Ron Horrocks, 105, and Billy Bedell, 167, placed third. Uintah captured cap-tured first place in the Region 7 Tournament, and Jordan placed second. Cyprus pocketed third place honors. Cobbs placed second last year. "The teams that have a shot at the state title are West, Davis, Uintah, Box Elder, Pleasant Grove, SpringviLle and Woods Cross," stated Uintah High School wrestling coach, Chuck Henry. The Utes are defending state champs. They will be going after their 14th state title and sixth in a row. Davis edged Box Elder, 200V to 198, for first place in the Region Four Tournament. The Darts qualified 12 wrestlers to the state tournament, and have the most first place champions at six. Mike Tavlor. 112: Roeer Parcell. 126; Robert Johnson, 155; Greg . Schuller, 167; Robert Steed, 185 and Jon Warden, heavyweight. Box Elder will have ten wrestlers in the state tournament, tour-nament, and has five first place region champions in Stewart Richards, 105; Jim Smoot, 98; Rowdy Poulson, 119; MattSmoot, 132 and Jim Bel, 145. Matt Smoot is a defending state champ. West captured first place in the Region Five Tournament with 133 points and Woods Cross nabbed second place at 104 points. West qualified all 12 wrestlers for the state tournament, and has five first place region champions in Tominaga, 98; Andy Gonzales, 105; Gallager, 119; Armstrong, 132 and Stone, 145. Eleven Woods Cross tusslers will compete in the state tournament, and three matmen, Jason Whitney, 185; Jeff Lewis, 167, Mark Jacobs, 112, nabbed first place titles. Whitney is a defending state champ. Pleasant Grove pocketed first place in Region Six with 178 points, and Springville placed second at 163. Timpview nabbed third at 154 points, the Vikings will send 11 tusslers to the state tournament. They have three first place region champs in Barry Frazier, . ' 112; Craig Cook, 138 and Moore, 145. Springville qualified eight wrestlers for the state tournament, and they have four first place region champs in Harmer, 119; Wilson, 105; Doty, 185 and Roy lance, heavyweight. Frazier placed second last year. The Cyprus Pirates will send 10 tusslers to the state tournament. Their first place region champs are Aaron Coon, 112 and Enos Lucero, 126. Jordan qualified 11 tusslers to the state tour nament. Their first place region champs are Hal Cooper, 167; Mike Meldrum, 155 and Scott Gessell, 132. Brett Brown's first round opponent in the 98 pound class, Thursday, in the state tournament will be Rex Roberts, Payson, fourth place winner m Region Six The winner of the Brown-Roberts match will battle Troy DeChamps of Ben Lomond or Chris Hansen of Viewmont in the second round. Uintah's 105 pounder, Ron Horrocks, will take on Dwight Griffin of Bountiful in the first round. The winner in the Horrocks-Griffin match will battle Stewart Richards of Box Elder or Gray of Cedar City in the second round. Griffin placed second in Region Five. Foston Chivers, 112, will encounter the third place tussler in Region Four, Kendall Bryant, Logan, in the first round, The winner of the Chivers-Bryant Chivers-Bryant match will take on Jenkins of Springville or Mark Jacobs, Woods Cross. Jeff Good, Uintah's 119 pounder, will battle the third placer in Region Five, Chris Howells of Highland in the first round. The winner of the Good-Howells match will battle either Wall of Jordan or Harmer of Springville. Matt Hacking, 138, will take on the sixth place winner in Region Six, Steve Aaron of Timpview, in the first round. The winner in the Hacking-Aaron match will battle Cardon, Logan Curtin, Spanish Fork, in the s"! round. Randy Smuin, Uintah's 145 pouj will encounter Taft Rogers, Pr'1 sixth placer in Region Six, in the fw . round. The winner of the Smuin-Roj?1 match will take on Blake Johnson 2 Ben Lomond or Fletcher of Timpvij, Kay Smuin, Uintah's 155 pou,' and Rex Habbard, Logan, third pO in Region four, will battle in the fiJ round.
