Show Vernal girl cagers thump Altamont Longhorns The girl Panthers at Vernal Junior High garnered second place in the Uintah Basin League with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses due to a 27 to 12 vic tory over the Lady Longhorns in Altamont, Thursday. The win improves' Vernal's overall record to 7 wins and 2 losses. Vernal and Altamont scored four points in the first quarter, but the Panthers put in two more points for a 10-8 lead after two quarters. The Panthers outscored the Lady Longhorns, 6 to 2, in the third quarter for a 16 to 10 advantage. Vernal put in 11 points in the fourth quarter, and Altamont popped in two points to make the final score: Vernal, 27 and Altamont, 12. The top scorer for Vernal was Michelle Green with 9 points on three field goals and three free throws. Mari Green scored 7 points. Also scoring counters were Julene Johnson, 4; Vicki Fowler, 3; Tia Licbhardt, 2 and Deah Bennion, 2. The top scorer for Altamont was Sabra Barton with four points. She scored 17 points in Altamont's victory in Vernal, January 3. Roosevelt finished in first place in the Uintah Basin League with a 7-1 record. ' Vernal placed second at 6 and 2. The Panthers suffered losses to Altamont and Roosevelt, but defeated West, Duchesne, twice; Roosevelt and Altamont. Vernal also defeated Green River, Wyoming, in a non-league game. Teams from Vernal, West, Roosevelt, Altamont and Duchesne will compete in a tournament at West Junior High. The championship contest will begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
