The Uintah Utes jumped into a tie for fourth place when they toppled the Cyprus Pirates in Magna, Friday, Fri-day, 65 to 61. U'u5 2(3p5D2ze Cyipras The Pirates from Cyprus had a nine-point nine-point lead of 28 to 19 with five minutes left in the second quarter, but the Uintah Utes' scoring machine erupted for 46 points in the rest of the game to force the Pirates to walk the plank in Vernal, Friday, 65 to 61. Brent Labrum put in the first field goal of the game for a 2-0 Uintah lead, but the game was tied at 2-2, 4-4, 6-6 and 10-10. Field goals by Dee Huber, Scott Larsen, Dennis Rupp and a free throw gave the Priates a 17 to 12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Cyprus outscored Uintah, 11 to 7, in the first three minutes of the second quarter for a nine-point lead of 28-19, but Uintah called timeout and returned to the game with a stingy defense, which allowed Cyprus only four points in the rest of the second quarter. The Utes also became hot in the department of offense as they bombed Cyprus, 13 to 4, and tied the game up at 32 points after two quarters. Five points by Brent Labrum, a three-point play and a field goal, cut Cyprus' lead to six-points, 30-24. Field goals by Ron Ellis, Derrin Gardiner and Burke Buckalew tied the game up at 30-30. Scott Larsen of Cyprus pui in two free throws for a 32-30 lead, out Derrin Gardiner hit a two-pointer with 20 seconds left in the second quarter to tie up the game at 32-32. The Utes continued to rip the nets in the third quarter as they roared out to a seven-point lead of 41 to 34 due to five points by Ron Ellis and two points each by Brent Labrum and Derrin Gardiner. Ellis hit 3 out of 4 free throws, stole the ball and put in a field goal. Derrin Gardiner connected on two field goals, and Joe Gardiner and Clark McClellan hit two free throws to make the score at the end of the third quarter, 49 to 45, in favor of Uintah. Ron Ellis fired in the first field goal in the fourth quarter, but two free throws by Scott Larsen, a steal by Sterling Cloward and a field goal cut Uintah's lead to 51 to 49. A field goal by Joe Gardiner returned a four-point lead to the Utes, but a tip-in by Dee Huber narrowed the Utes' lead to two points. Two free throws by Burke Buckalew delivered a four-point advantage to Uintah. However, a free throw by Karl Cloward and a two-pointer by Dee Huber cut the Utes' lead to one point. burke Buckalew hit an outside shot with two minutes left in the game, and two charity tosses by Clark McClellan gave Uintah a five point lead of 59 to 54. Cyprus' Karl Cloward tossed in a free throw and Scott Larsen put in a two-pointer two-pointer to clip three points off the Uintah lead at 59 to 57. Burke Buckalew fired in a field goal, but Cyprus countered coun-tered the Uintah score with a two-pointer two-pointer of its own. Brent Labrum converted a free throw with 21 seconds left for a 61 to 59 lead. The Pirates marched down the floor and hit a field goal .that made tha contest a one -pointer, but the Utes' Derrin Gardiner found Brent Labrum wide open, fired a bomb to the eager, who roared to the hoop for a layup with six seconds remaining. Labrum was fouled while shooting the field goal and put in a free throw for a three-point play, which made the final score: Uintah, 65 and Cyprus, 61. The Utes had four cagers in double figures. Brent Labrum fired in 19 points on seven field goals and five free throws. Ron Ellis and Burke Buckalew put in 14 points. Both cagers fired in five field goals and hit four free throws. Derrin Gardiner scored ten points on five field goals. Joe Gardiner and Clark McClellan flipped in four points, Uintah fired in 23 field goals and hit 19 out of 26 free throws. Cyprus' 6'5" center, Dee Huber, fired in 19 points on eight field goals, and three free throws. Also scoring points for Cyprus were: Scott Larsen, 17; Dennis Rupp, 10; Karl Cloward, 7; Jeff Johns, 4; 6'9" Mike Pulley, 2 and Sterling Cloward, 2.
