Show Ute Tribe sets date for water compact ratification A Referendum Vote to determine the fate of the Ute Water Compact is scheduled for March 4 on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. According to the terms of the Compact, Com-pact, the document must be ratified by members of the Ute Tribe as well as the U.S. Congress before it becomes effective. ef-fective. The March 4 election will follow the same procedure as the General Election for Business Committee members. The election will be by secret ballot and will be conducted under the rules and regulations established by the Election Board. Those appointed to the Election Board are Nancy Pawwinnee, Willard Gardner, and Lee Alhandra. The polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the communities of Ouray, Randlett, Fort Duchesne, Whiterocks, and Myton. In a referendum, at least 30 percent of the eligible voters of the tribe must vote in the election. The majority vote will then be the conclusive and binding decision of the people to accept or reject the compact. According to the Constitution and By-Laws By-Laws of the tribe, an eligible voter is one who is 21 years of age or over and who has maintained a legal residence on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation for one year preceding the election. An information meeting to discuss the contests of the Water Compact will be conducted Feb. 20 in the auditorium of the Tribal Administration Building in Fort Duchesne. The meeting will convene at 10 a.m. |
