Show Panthers capture first place Vernal Junior High's wrestling team captured first place in the Castle Rock Tournament in Colorado, Saturday with a total of 277'v points. Cherry Creek placed second at 151 1 i. , and Castle Rock pocketed third place at 132' ., Following Vernal, Cherry Creek and Castle Rock were: Henry, fourth, 131 4; Parker, fifth, 97; Air Academy, sixth, 7H; Goddard, seventh, 72 and Overland, eighth, 51. The Panthers pocketed nine first place crowns in the tournament. Mike Smith, 75, captured first place when he pinned Craig Peer of Parker. Smith also pinned Bill Kinsell of Goddard. Brad Funk, 80, nabbed first place when he downed Arellano of Air 'Academy due to a fall. He also blanked Shaun Curtis of Castle Rock, 9-0 and pinned Doug Busby. Larson Caldwell, 100, pinned Anderson An-derson of Air Academy in the first place battle, Caldwell also pinned Callen of Castle Rock. David Gentry, 105, placed first when he pinned Turner of Castle Rock. He also thumped Wilkerson of Henry, 2-0. Torr McCurdy, 110, pinned Ingraham of Henry for first place honors. He also pinned his other opponent. Kent Boren, 120, nabbed first place honors when he pinned Miller of Cherry Creek. He also flattened Rodarte of Henry and Maez of Goddard due to falls. Jody Young, 145, defeated Conner of Cherry Creek for first place honors. Young pinned Portalan, Castle Rock and Sweet, Parker. Pat Jenkins, 155, pinned Ragan of Air Academy in the first place battle and pinned Morrison of Cherry Creek. David Weeks, heavyweight, defeated Andrews of Parker in the finals and pinned Packard, Overland and Bonato, Henry. Vernal's tenth matman in the finals, Brent Morrill, 85, placed second. He was pinned by Thane Larson of Parker. Morrill decisioned Mike Huffman of Goddard, 7-4. Gary Murray, 95 and Derrin Bailey, 135, pocketed third places. Gary Murray pinned Rod Alpert of Castle Rock for third place honors. Murray pinned Aljx'rt in the first round, and was nipM'd by Wilkes of Parker, 4 3. Murray pinned Brown of Htriry . Derrin Bailey blanked Tetsch of Goddard, B-0, for third place, Bailey pinned Duke of Air Academy, and was edged by Jorgeason of Overland, 6-2. Bailey pinned Alexander, Henry. Shane Gross, 90; Woody, 115 and Neldon Smuin, 125, placed fourth in the tournament. Gross was pinned by Leob of Parker in the third place battle. Gross lost to Bob Lewis of Castle Rock in the first round. Gross pinned Rafsky of Overland and blanked Anderson of Goddard, 2-0. Conger of Castle Rock nipped Woody, 7-6, for third place. Woody was pinned by Coffer of Cherry Creek in the first round. However, Woody recovered from his first round fall as he pinned Sandoval, Goddard and Bogname, Parker. Neldon Smuin was defeated by Doherty in the third place battle, 10-6,. Smuin was pinned in the first round by Zerr of Cherry Creek. Smuin pinned Roth of Air Academy and Hardin of Goddard. Scott Gardner, Vernal, 165, pinned Zarate of Goddard, but he was defeated by Lockwood of Air Academy and Lee of Overland. The Panthers will battle the Rough Riders in Roosevelt, Wednesday, December 19 at 2 p.m. Vernal will host Rangely High School's junior varsity team. December 20 at 6 p.m. A, ?. J - !
