Show FRANK FORGER bound over to district court under ball the preliminary hearing of frank schmidt who it Is alleged forged the name of charles zelmer to a check on the utah state bank tor which he later tried to pass on a clerk in benjamin cohens clothing store at twenty fifth street was held this morning and mr schmidt was bound over to the district court under ball mr joseph chez appeared for the defendant while county attorney Hu laniski appeared tor the prosecution five witnesses appeared for the prosecution while the defense depended entirely on the failure of the prosecution to establish a case miss rachel cohen was the first witness on the stand on accod nt of her youth she being but 11 years of age mr chez questioned her availability as a witness but after propounding a number of questions as to the sacredness of her oath and her knowledge of what constituted an oath he was obliged to admit that she would do as a witness miss cohens testimony dealt simply with her handling of the check in question attar it had been given to her by the clerk mr douglas who was working as a clerk for mr caben at the time mr schmidt tried pass the check testified as to the transaction and to tho conversation which he bad with mr schmidt mr zelmer was then put upon the stand to testify as to the signature upon the check which purported to be his he dented abat lt was his signature and also stated that he had not previously known the defendant no defense was made and the case was submitted without argument after which judge murphy announced his decision IRON MARKET heavy demands by structural and plate trade new york july 6 the iron age in its issue of today says the feeling in the iron trade generally Is distinctly hopeful and yet there is little that is tangible to justify increased optimism those branches which saved the situation after the check of the late spring are still the backbone of the good times these are the structural and the plate trades which are flourishing through the railroad buying of cars and engines and the heavy requirements for buildings bridges and ships for the lakes As an indication of the volume of business being done the fact may be mentioned that the american bridge company alone booked orders tor bridges buildings and structures aggregating tons during june the new york contracts for buildings involving tons ot structural material were placed during the week chicago did a good business and has some large work in sight in the plate arade alli in the central west have been forced through sheer inability to make deliveries li to transfer work to eastern mills some good rail orders have been placed lately including tons with one mill in the central west and tons with an eastern plant the event of the week in the lighter lines has been the adjustment between the american sheet and tin plate company and the amalgamated association of both the sheet and the tin plate scales the men receded 1 completely from their demands for an advance in wages and accepted substantially tho existing scales one very important point wai made and that Is that the clauses relating to restricting of output were eliminated this has been a sore point with those manufacturers whose mills were under union rule the rebate of 12 per cent in wages on tin plates intended to supplant foreign plates imported under the drawback clauses continues to august 1 after that date it may ie restored by the company to the original 3 per cent rebate it conditions require it tho settlement of the wage in those two important branches removes practically the only cloud on the horizon from a market point of view only a prolonged struggle could havo affected values there are that at least one large consuming interest in the foundry trade has begun to feel the market for pig iron seriously but that Is the exception the deadlock is really unbroken aad the drift of events seems to favor the buyers since sov hem iron has weakened further and some smaller interests have accepted the basis of 11 for no 2 foundry at birmingham the leading interests in all the principal producing sec alons however are abstaining from any attempt to force pig iron upon unwilling buyers it will take some striking event to stare the buying movement some merchants believing that we may drag along in this manner or the whole 0 this month |
