Show VERNA lUTAH where the drawing for uintah lands will take place A B williams editor of the richfield reaper who recently visited vernal with the inland stock company tells of his trip to uintah county vernal has won the warmest spot in all our hearts of any place we have been on our tri it need not be surprising I 1 cannot say too much complimentary of the town and the beautiful valley in which it is situated the ashiley valley is a lovely verdant and emerald setting in what is now a desert waste climbing to a ridge about tour miles from the town of vernal wo caught our first glimpse of one of the most beautiful home spots in utah for miles and miles stretched fields of green meadows and graceful trees it was as refreshing to us as the sight of the promised land to the followers of moses vernal is different from any other town in utah in that the inhabitants are not all bunched together the business district Is compact but towards the outskirts the people own whole blocks and they are all cultivated under lucern lawns orchards and gardens contiguous to these come the farms on which their owners live and make many improvements so bemal may be said to be miles in extent ashley valley contains about souls and vernal Is the leading and practically the only trading commercial and ecclesiastical center for it all there are a number of fine business and public buildings and rest dences in the town and beautiful homes scattered all over the valley the business bouses are models of neatness and up to date there is a big volume of business done in the town one store alone does from to worth per year nearly every business house of any importance imports in car load lots up to the present time nearly all supplies have gone into vernal by way of price and the road is lined with wagons and outfits transporting freight in and farm and mine products out A change ig being made however which will greatly facilitate transportation in and out of the valley A spur from the denver rio grande road runs to dragon about CO miles from vernal this la a camp which Is putting out large quantities of asphalt and other kindred products an automobile line Is being completed from dragon to vernal and a number of heavy machines will be put on some of them carrying sixteen persons or several tons of freight the trip between tha two places can be covered in a few hours and vernal will then be not more than twenty four hours distant from salt lake or denver whereas jt a now about sixty hours 1 vernal has what no other town of its size in utah has streets and sidewalks paved with asphaltum this is obtained but a few miles from town and la so nearly pure and in a marketable condition that it Is put down with very little preparation the ashley valley is capable of supporting a big population there are now about acres under 1 1 I 1 alon while there are acres which can be cultivated and water for it all the green the duchesne and the uintah rivers would supply half a million acres with boina no matter what may be the changes wrought by the opening of the reservation or the advent of the moffat railroad vernal will be a good thrifty and prosperous town it is so situated that no other place can draw away from it the support which belongs to it the valley has untold resources besides its important agricultural interests it has mineral resources which will sooner or later become important factors in its industrial position I 1 have not seen a place in utah that has impressed me more favorably than does vernal the inland stock company played a weeks engagement in vernal and to the largest houses of any place along the trip we have received the very highest compliments along our entire tour the company has been pronounced as good as any that has visited the places we have appeared not excepting the kempton madison square and other well known companies the young ladles of the company were accorded the enjoyable privilege of a nice in one of the new automobiles which are to be seen in vernal every day according to our present plans we will be home next week DEVUN MAKES BIG EFFORT TO straighten TANGLE depositors of failed topeka bank intimate criminal prosecution if institution fails to settle topeka kas july 4 J T bradley of sedan receiver of the first national bank arrived in the city and took charge of the bank when asked tonight for some news about the banks condition receiver bradley said 1 I am not permitted to give any information my orders from the comptroller of the currency are explicit on the point I 1 make my report to him and am not allowed to talk about it none of the officials of the bank would discuss the institution affairs when confronted by depositors they have turned everything over to receiver bradley and he Is making an effort to get the banks affairs in shape the only thing in the shape of information about the bank comes from the devlan interests clifford ahlsted attorney for C J devlin says the assets are worth more than the indebtedness and that the bank can pay out although mr devlan has given a warranty deed and a quit claim deed to the first national bank property which Is said to be valued at less encumber ances amounting to about this does not mean that the property will bring this amount mr devlins obligations to all the other banks of this city than the first national do not aggregate as much as F W freeman cashier ot the merchants national said tonight we have no loan to mr devlan personally one of his companies some time ago borrowed from our bank but this loan Is secured by gilt edge collateral worth twice as much as the bank loaned him the extent of our dealings wilh mr devlan and his companies depositors are becoming much wrought up over the matter they intimate criminal prosecution will be made if the bank fails to settle with the depositors alleging that carelessness was largely the cause tor the failure A determined effort Is being made by the devlan interests to pull out of the hole A committee representing the creditors of the devlan estate will make every possible effort to save the estate from insolvency the committee representing the creditors has pledged itself to balse all the money needed to safeguard the interests ot the people to whom C J devlan owes money the committee will aaa in connection with the corporation that has been formed to handle the estate whether the interests of the creditors safeguarded by the committee business men think there will be little difficulty in getting the corporation started and bringing the devlin business out of its present difficulties without insolvency it is not known just how maii money will be needed to reorganize the devlan interests it is now thought that something like will be sufficient when the corporation planned it waa the intention to save the first national bank of topaha this would have taken much more money than is necessary now circumstances mado it impossible to do this and now it lg no longer necessary to put up money for saving the bank it is thought that the devlin property and the resources of the bank itself will be sufficient to pay all obligations of the bank C S gleed stated that in his opinion the first national bank would not be able to resume business in brief this Is the condition of the bank the obligations of the bank of depositors po amount to about against these deposits there is the property transferred yesterday and topeka real estate securities turned over to the bank by mr devlan amounting in all to in addition there are the insurance policies turned in by mr devlan the actual cash value of which is stated at about the assets of the bank ex elusive of devlan collateral with a pa value of the actual cash value of this collateral cannot yet be determined the oher notes held by the bank amount to at the almo the bank was closed yesterday morning there was approximately in cash on hand the relation of the assets to the obligations to depositors po depends upon the cash value of the devlin collateral and upon whether or not the transference from the devlan estate holds good mrs devlin gives up property topeka kas july 4 the men engaged in the clearing up of the affairs of the first national bank praise the participation of mrs C J in her husbands affairs the insurance policies which she assigned for the benefit of the creditors were entirely hers and might have been held for herself clear of all connection with the bank she has assigned all her insurance except that which went to children the same Is true of her dowry interest in worth of real estate the central bank announced that it did not hold any amount of C 3 dev lans personal paper this has been regarded as a devlan bank the debts due the bank from the devlan interest are owed entirely by companies in which devlin was only part owner these are the marquette third vein coal company the toluca marquette and northern railroad the devlin jmiller coal company and crawford coal company charles S deed said tonight it now seems that every dollar of the devlin property has been located and that the value of the property is greater than the debts |
