Proof of Birth Date for Social Security Purposes May Be Made in Various Ways The notion persists that there is no use applying for your social security retirement benefits until un-til you have your birth certificate certifi-cate in you hand. We would like to stamp out this notion once and for all for several reasons. First, because it is not true. Second, because a person can lose benefits bene-fits if he delays too long coming to see us, and third, we may be able to help him locate proof of his age if he is having trouble finding something by himself. Birth certificates are, of course the best proof of when a person was born. The trouble is birth certificates Just don'e exist for a lot of people. Fortunately there are a number of documents we can use instead of a birth certificate to prove your age. Church records such as baptismal certificates are good evidence of date of birth. Entries in the family bible, military records, rec-ords, passports, school records, old insurance policies, voting rec ords, all of these are acceptable as proof of your age. As a last resort when everything else falls, there are the government census records. Ordinarily, we save this until last since a quick search of the census records costs you $4. Also, there is a good chance that your social security record we get from our central office will contain evidence of your age. Our advice, then, is this: Come see us two or three months before you actually plan to retire. If you have some proof of your age handy, bring it along.
