Show BAC Wins, Loses To Hill Field Hornets I The Branch Agricultural col- lege basketball team, composed of 15 men at the present time, 'got its first taste of competition Monday and Tuesday nights of this week, and while the rough edges of early season play were very evident, there was plenty to indicate that the Broncos of 1953 should represent the local school well. Coach Geo Petty's squad defeated de-feated the Hill Air Force Base team, composed of players from all parts of the country, by a score of 47 to 40 Monday night, but fell before the same team Tuesday night 60 to 56. In the first game the Broncos Jumped into an early lead, holding a 14 to 7 advantage at the end of the first period, and managed to stay In front most of the way. The visitors managed to tie the score three times late in the game but couldn't pull ahead. The procedure was reversed the second night, except that the Broncos couldn't quite catch up at any time, although they did stay very close to their opponents oppon-ents throughout the last half after getting behind 17 to 9 and 35 to 21 in the first two periods. per-iods. Coach Petty used every one of his 15 men in the opening game in spite of the fact that five of the squad members have just returned re-turned that afternoon from the final football trip of the season. In the second game he again used all but three of the 15 men. Throughout both games the coach did a lot of substituting, fiviny the players a chance to show what they could do and trying to find a combination that might develop Into a strong team. In the first game particularly several of the newcomers to the Bronco squad seemed to tighten up with the usual first game nervousness, ner-vousness, but most of them j seemed to loosen up considerab-: considerab-: ly in the second encounter. Boyd ("Goonie" Adams, high scorer ' from last year's squad seemed to be starting off where he left 1 (Continued on Page 14) BAG BASKETBALL (Continued from Page 13) off last year, when he dropped in eight field goals in the opening open-ing game. However, he had a terrible ter-rible night in the second encounter encoun-ter and was as cold as he was hot the night before. Teddy Smith, semi-regular of last year, showed unusual promise, playing excellent defensive ball in the first game and adding an amazing amaz-ing scoring punch in the second game to go along with another good defensive performance. He dropped in 10 field goals and three foul shots for a 23 point total. Reese Naegle, another semi-regular of last year, showed a lot of improvement and a lot of promise. Bob Crane and Nick Lunt, the othei two members of last year's squad back for action this year played their usual steady game, although Bob didn't turn in his football togs until Monday afternoon. af-ternoon. Considerable promise was shown in the performances of the newcomers on the squad, including in-cluding rerrald Evans of Tooele', Stan Ivie of Salina, Garth Fisher of Vernal, Dave Magleby of Monroe, Mon-roe, Bud Fullmer and Scott Davis Da-vis of Delta, Gordon Sargent of Cedar, Larry Crawford of Idaho, George Davif of Las Vegas, and Don Keeney of Kentucky. , The squad will be cut to 12 men before the opening of the Invitational tournament next week, and after another series against the Hill Field squad this week end. Coach Petty will take all 15 men with him to Ogden for the two games Friday and Saturday, and Monday will announce an-nounce his 12-man squad with which hewlll seek to win the ICAC championship. |
