Show Where is Hansen? Editor: A few days ago I wanted to send a letter to my Congressman, Jim Hansen. I looked in the South Davis Directory to obtain his address. It wasn't in the Government Pages, nor was it listed under the H's. I then turned to the U.S. West Directory. Di-rectory. There I found under Congressmen, Con-gressmen, both Wayne Owens and Howard Nielson's addresses. But my Congressman was not listed. So I looked under the H's and again was unsuccessful in locating an address ad-dress for him. I got the distinct impression that Congressman Jim Hansen does not want to hear from his constituents. After the Davis County Convention Conven-tion I tried to locate his Campaign Headquarters. Apparently he had listed that address on his campaign brochure. But when I went looking for that particular address, I could not find it. The house to the north was too low a number and the house to the south was too high a number. Between those two houses was a log cabin with no house number nor any outside sign to indicate that it was his campaign headquarters. I ask all the people who are in Congressman Jim Hansen District, how do you feel? Do you get the same impression I got that our Con gressman does not want to be bothered with those who live in his district? It surely appears that way to me. Pearl Wendel Bountiful Pay increase Editor: Do you recall following the defeat of the tax initiatives, when 1 governor and the legislature denied de-nied that there was a tax surplus, sufficient to support the tax loss if the initiatives should pass? The legislature gave the governor and all of the judges a substantial pay increase. The following year the governor and the legislature admitted that there was a huge tax surplus, so they set aside the two-year-old tax spending limitation law, so that they could spend the huge tax surplus. When the teachers demanded all of the surplus, or they would go on strike. The legislature gave all state employees a six percent raise, and appropriated the largest educational funding package in the history of the state. Now this year after the defeat of the Sales Tax on Food Initiative, because it was too expensive for the bureaucracy, the greedy teachers are again demanding all of the ongoing tax surplus, or they will go on strike. The legislature is considering giving the governor another pay increase, in-crease, and also increase their own salaries from $65 to $100 per day, in addition to their daily per diem expense of $25 to $50 depending on where they live in the state. Personally, I do not believe they deserve a $35 a day increase, which is more than many people in the state earn daily. I do not believe for a minute that more pay makes a better teacher or a legislator. Bob Wright Orem Coon thanked Editor: We have lived in Bountiful for 18 years near Orchard Drive. North and Mueller Canyons have been well-loved and well-used retreats for our family. We have no connection connec-tion with the Wilderness, Sierra or Wildlife groups nor with Coun-cilwoman Coun-cilwoman Renee Coon and the BHRCCA. We would like to publicly thank Ms. Coon for her efforts to halt the Wasatch Variation of the gas pipeline to be constructed this summer. Notice! Not halt the pipeline! Just halt the Wasatch Variation. Having read pages of information, informa-tion, attended meetings and signed petitions, we see no reason given for the Wasatch "Deviation" other than the Forest Service approved it over the original route. The original route would have avoided high population areas, proven unstable slopes, and a major earthquake fault. Why the change to involve all of these plus Bountiful' s fragile recreation areas? No wonder there are suspicions, innuendos and name calling! The Davis County Clipper's recent re-cent editorial states that the 12,000 people who signed a petition opposing oppos-ing the Wasatch Variation should have done more. What? We attended attend-ed the Bountiful City Council meeting in January and were rudely reprimanded by Mayor Bob Linnell for having a different opinion than his. (We dared to applaud our approval ap-proval of a speaker's point). This meeting was advertised as an opportunity for the citizens to ask questions of pipeline personnel. In fact, it was the occasion for them to whitewash the environmental impact of the impending construction. construc-tion. They called it a "done deal' even before FERC's approval. They had not even visited the canyons. Yet, they described how they would build access roads to haul 40-foot lengths of pipe, bulldozers, dynamite, dyna-mite, etc. They would not rule out condemning property, rerouting streams or ' 'temporary" contamination con-tamination of water supplies. We are heartsick and disgusted. Twelve thousand people over 18 years old walking into businesses to sign a petition out of a population of 36,659 including children, the aged and infirm would impress us if we were elected officials. We have written our Congressmen Con-gressmen and our city officials begging beg-ging them to halt the Wasatch Variation of the pipeline. Now we're praying. Ed and Marilyn Larrabee Bountiful |
