Show Writing contest set Cash prizes totaling more than $2,000 will be awarded in the upcoming writing contest sponsored by the Brigham Young University Center for the Study of Christian Values in Literature. Dr. Marilyn Arnold, center director, said students and non-students non-students alike from across the nation are expected to enter the contest which is being conducted to encourage the writing and reading of quality literature that presents Christian values and themes. The contest will include four categories: short story, poetry, personal essay and critical essay, she said. Deadline for entries is May 15, and winners will be announced an-nounced July 15. Contest rules are available through the BYU English Department, Depart-ment, A-246 JKBA, BYU, Provo, Utah 84602, and at the information desks in the BYU Administration Building and the Wilkinson Center. All entries in fiction, poetry and the personal essay will be judged according to their artistic and moral qualities. Contestants should strive for a blend of artistic form and inherent moral content. Entries in the critical essay division may either interpret high quality literature from a Christian-critical perspective per-spective or suggest a theory of criticism which could be employed to evaluate literature. The center has a dual concern in sponsoring this contest, according to Dr. Arnold. First, it wants to encourage writers to write value-centered value-centered literature, rather than cheap literature that appeals to the baser instincts in people. Second, it wants to encourage the writing and reading of serious literature that uses art and thought to illuminate human experience. This literature would avoid sentimental content " 5!
