Show "t- Bingham wins localmeet There were over 1,300 contestants, judges and teachers on campus during the two-day meet, representatives of 36 Utah and Nevada schools. Sweepstakes for the out-of-state schools went to Bonanza High School, Las Vegas, with Valley High, another Las Vegas school, coming in second. Third place honors in the in-state contest, Smith indicated, went to students from Cottonwood Cot-tonwood High School. Fourth place was won by Hillcrest with fifth place won for the second year by a squad from Cedar High School. "Competition was extremely ' keen in both debate and individual events," Smith said. "In some individual events as many as 170 contestants competed for the dozen semifinalist positions. Some of the finest forensic talent I've ever seen came to light in the final rounds." The Abe Lincoln Forensic Tournament is sponsored each year by SUSC For three out of the past four years, students from Bingham High School have captured instate in-state sweepstakes at Southern Utah State College's' Abe Lincoln Forensics Tournament. BHS did it again this year, defeating Orem High ' School for the second consecutive year. Bingham forensics coach Dennis Edmonds was named "Coach of the Year" at an awards assembly held at the conclusion of the recent tournament. "Abe Lincoln is the largest high school contest in Utah and is recognized now as one of the largest national high school tournaments," said M. L. Smith, SUSC forensic coach. "I believe we're right in saying that some of the finest forensic students in the country were on campus recently from the forensic-rich Utah and Nevada area." |
