Show No. 1 Cowboys dump Parowan if u PAROWAN A devastating second quarter blitz by Kanab contributed to the Cowboys' easy 62-49 domination of Parowan High School here Friday night. The visitors broke open a deadlocked game early in the second period and five minutes later had forged a 14-point lead. The Rams were never able to recover. "Our kids didn't hang together when we started getting behind," said coach Ralph Riggs. "That, added to the fact that you just can't play behind Kanab, really did us in." Both teams started slowly; it was just 4-4 halfway through the first quarter. But then Parowan put together some of its best and most intelligent basketball in the next four minutes. Mike Jones, Robbie Stevens and Brooke Bentley strung together outside jumpers, however nearly always countered by Kanab's excellent outside shooters. Trailing 12-10 with 1:15 left in the quarter, Riggs decided to go for the final shot of the period. The Rams handled the ball superbly in the next minute, finally getting the bull to an open Mike Jones for two points at the buzzer. It was 12-12, and the Rams appeared very capable of playing with the No. 1-rated Cowboys. But not for long. Ninety seconds into the second quarter, Kanab had scored six straight and another minute later it was 10 straight. Scott Robertson, Kekepi Finau and all-stater all-stater Gary Glover contributed heavily to the second-quarter dis mantling, when the Cowboys outscored PHS 24-9. Kanab was not content with their hefty 15-point lead, and put together a solid third quarter effort to stretch it to 21. The Rams took advantage ad-vantage of a relaxed Cowboy squad in the final quarter and managed to outscore their visitors 18-10 18-10 to bring the final score back into range. All in all, the Region 12 leaders looked every bit the No. 1 state ranked team they are now rated by The Salt Lake Tribune poll. Their domination of the Rams was complete, both inside and outside. Only at the charity stripe, where the Cowboys could muster just 31 percent, was their play sub-par. Glover and Robertson each popped in 10 field goals, with Glover adding a pair of free throws, to lead the Cowboys. Parowan's sophomore forward Doug Rogerson Penetrates the lane and puts up a jumper in Friday's 62-49 loss to No. 1-ranked Kanab. Rogerson scored 11 points, though seeing somewhat limited playing time. |
