Show Downs Redmen 66-55 Dixie wins the shootout By LYNETTE SAWYER Record Sports Reporter The first few minutes of the Cedar-Dixie Cedar-Dixie game turned out to be a pretty good indication of how the whole game would t turn out. One minute into the game Cedar had not scored. Two minutes into the game Cedar had not scored. Three minutes into the game Cedar had not scored. The Redmen's first point of this big rivalry came with 4:50 left in the first quarter. The Kevin Garrett foul shot made the score Cedar 1 . . .Dixie 8. The high Flyers soared on from there to c claim a disappointingly easy 66-55 win over Cedar before the CHS Gym's largest crowd of the season. The story of this game began and ended with Dixie's unstoppable Rob Gentry. The big senior took command of the inside game and scored 30 points before the night was over. Were it not for high-scoring center Kevin Garrett, the Redmen would have almost been shut out in the first quarter. The 6-5 postman claimed nine of Cedar's first 13 points. The Reds trailed 18-13 at the break. Dixie reeled off seven straight points to open the fourth quarter. Dixie led by 10, thanks to a somewhat disorganized Cedar defense and offense. Cedar tried several times to dent the j lead, getting it to six points twice down ' the stretch, but weren't able to get past that point. The Reds probably played their worst ball in that fourth quarter. Foul-prone Garrett fouled four times, finally leaving the game with 20 points. Gentry, the player who troubled the Redmen throughout the game, scored 10 of his 30 points in the crucial final period. Besides Garrett, Kevin Hunter cracked double figures with 10 and senior forward Lee Wood added nine. "Our team played a good game, they really did," said coach John Nielsen. "It was a lot closer game than the 11-point 11-point final margin would indicate." Nielsen said after watching game films of the rivalry: "I could only see seven shots Dixie missed all game, and three of those they got by offensive rebounds and put back in again. "We did play a good game. The difference was that Dixie was just superb," he concluded. I 1 1 In a fast-paced second quarter, the Redmen managed to play the Flyers more evenly. The Red defense forced more Dixie turnovers in this period than any other, but the home team could still manage to pull within just six at the half. The Reds, scorewise, did even better in the third period, though their play did , not appear to be that much stronger than in the second period. The strong Flyer rebounding pretty well kept Cedar at bay. Still, at the end of three quarters, CHS had pulled within three, and it appeared to be anyone's game going into the final quarter.
