Show Opera slated The Metropolitan Opera's new production of "Parade," a triple bill of three French works, will have its broadcast premiere Saturday afternoon. af-ternoon. The performance will be heard locally over radio station KGSU-FM, the Southern Utah State College station, beginning begin-ning at noon. All three works for the Texaco-Metropolitan Texaco-Metropolitan Opera RJio broadcast will be conducted by Manuel Rosenthal. Satie's ballet, "Parade," will be danced by guest artist Gary Chryst and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Principals for "Les Mamelles de Tiresias" are Catherine Malfitaro as Therese, David Holloway as her husband, and Alan Monk as the theatre manager. Hilda Harris will be heard as the child in "L'Enfant et les Sortileges," Sor-tileges," and the cast will also include Gail Robinson, Ruth Welting. Gwenodolyn Bradley, Joseph Frank, Andrea Velis, David Holloway and Julien Robbins. During the single intermission in-termission at the conclusion con-clusion of "Les Mamelles de Tiresias," Richard Woitach will present a musical and dramatic analysis of the trio. The three works being performed under the title, "Parade," all had their genesis during the period just before, during and after World War I. ' The ballet "Parade" was conceived by Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie and Pablo Picasso, and included in-cluded a program note by the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Apollinaire was the author of the play, "Les Memelles de Tiresias" on which Poulenc based his opera. Subtitled an opera buffa, it carries the message "Learn the lessons of the war and make more babies." The final opera, translated "The Child and the Sorceries" or "The Child and the Magic" was composed by Ravel to a libretto by the French author Colette sent him while he was serving on the front line with the French Army near Verdun. |
