Show PSC decision stalled too long One of the most important decisions ever to be made concerning Iron County and southwest Utah is hanging in the balance, costing residents money every day that it isn't made. The decision is the ownership of the electric system in the area, and the group charged with that decision-making responsibility is the Utah Public Service Commission. The wait, we feel, for that decision has been much too long. While we all wait, we are under the burden of high CP National electric rates, which would be lowered, according to proponents of both sides, if either Utah Power & Light Company or the Southwest Utah Cooperative Power Federation were allowed to purchase the system. But tHte PSC continually puts off the decision, hoping that it will be worked out some other way. In fact Chairwoman Milly Bernard told us recently that she hoped that the companies and groups involved could work the problem out themselves, alleviating the PSC of any responsibility in the matter. She also admitted that the decision was one of the toughest the group has ever been faced with, but it is still an issue that the people of southwest south-west Utah deserve a quick answer to. All the evidence has been before the PSC for over two months now, certainly long enough to make a decision and allow this issue; to move on to its next logical step, whatever that may be. The power issue in the area has been up in the air for well over a year now. We all deserve to now move on to something else and to a power company, whichever it may be, in this area that truly wants to be here. |
