Show The Thursday Tip -off Cedar High School Wrap-up With last week's loss to Dixie, Cedar City's hopes of a playoff berth for state championships disappeared. They might take comfort in knowing that Carbon defeated Payson and Spanish Fork downed Springville, both results also axing the Reds from consideration. This week's game against Springville may not mean much to the Redmen, whose season is now in essence over. But there is a lot riding on the line for Springville. A victory over Cedar will be their only hope for a chance at state playoffs. Dixie should clinch the Region Six, Division Two title with a 7-3 record with an expected victory over Carbon this week. Vic tories for both Spanish Fork and Springville, and a loss for Dixie will result in the championship going to Carbon, a victim of Cedar twice this year. Dixie, Spanish Fork, and Springville will be locked in the three way tie for second place. If Payson wins the game against Spanish Fork, the winner of the Dixie-Carbon game will go it first place, Ihe loser in second place and Spanish Fork will be tied with Springville for third place, unless of course, Springville loses. In that case first, second, and third places would be pretty much decided by the Dixie-Carbon game. Parowan vs. Milford PAROWAN Think Friday night's basketball game between Parowan (4-7) and Milford (0-11) won't mean much? You haven't talked with PHS coach Ralph Riggs lately. Riggs should be confident con-fident his Rams can pin loss number 12 on the hapless Tigers. Rather, as Riggs puts it, he's "scared". You really can't blame him. According to Riggs, "our team just hasn't been playing ball well . lately, and even more important, they haven't been playing together." Number two, Milford played one of its better games of the year earlier in the year against the Rams. After falling behind by a large margin, they came roaring back in the final quarter and gave their hosts some anxious moments before losing by six. Number three, the Tigers will be trying harder than ever to give their, home folks a first win. Number four, it's a Parowan-Milford game, one that has developed into quite a rivalry. The standings indicate Parowan doesn't need to win, but Riggs still feels his slumping charges need to come through. "A loss right before the round robin to a team that hasn't won a game yet would really hurt us," Riggs said. "What chances we have of making the state playoffs could really be damaged." Really, the only thing Parowan has to gain with a win (and a North Sevier loss) is a fifth place rather than a sixth place berth at the playoffs. Either way, the Rams would still face Panguitch or Piute in the first round. Both teams own wins over Parowan this year. The likely first-round matchups at next week's regional playoffs in -Beaver: Kanab, Gunnison and either Escalante or Valley will get "byes". Beaver will probably play Bryce Valley, En-' terprise will likely meet Wayne, North Sevier will meet Piute or Panguitch, Parowan will face the team North Sevier doesn't get, and Milford will play Escalante or Valley. |
