Show T-Bird Welch selected for special award Junior guard Hal Welch will receive an "Outstanding "Out-standing Thunderbird" award for his basketball performances during the last Southern Utah State College homestand. The 6-1 shooter from Las Vegas, Nev., pumped in 50 points in two games against Adams State College and Fort Lewis. He fired in 27 against the Indians and then came back the next night with 23 against Fort Lewis. "Welch has been a big factor in our ability to adjust to the loss of Dave Knudsen, our leading scorer," Tom McCracken, Mc-Cracken, SUSC coach, says. "We have had to rely more on outside shooting, and Welch has done the job for us. That's the reason he is receiving this outstanding out-standing Thunderbird award." The "Outstanding Thunderbird" presentation presen-tation is made randomly through the season to recognize players for outstanding effort, according ac-cording to Floyd Rigby, representing Rigby Enterprises, award sponsor. "Our goal is for this award to give added incentive for extra effort in SUSC athletic contests. athletic contests. Hopefully, the award will encourage team unity and outstanding individual in-dividual effort," Rigby says. |
