Reds place swimmers PROVO Those members of Cedar High's swim team who qualified at regional competitions, traveled to the Brigham Young University campus for state competitions com-petitions last week. "It was the toughest competition our swimmers swim-mers have faced," stated Cedar swim coach Dick Coston. "Some of the schools were surprised that we had swimmers there at all." The girls' division from Cedar scored 39 points. Leah Jones took eighth in final competition in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the consolation bracket in the 100-yard backstroke. Catherine Wexler took fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in the consolation con-solation bracket. Two relay teams from the girls' division placed. Jones, Tonja Widick, Martha Ludwig, and Michelle Fullmer make up the 200-yard medley relay which placed fourth in the consolation bracket. Placing fourth in the 400-yard freestyle, consolation, was the relay team of Wexler, Ludwig, Widick and Dana Shakespeare. "This was our first state swim competition," commented Coston. "I'm just happy they came away feeling pretty good about their performances." per-formances." Cedar's boys division scored 34 points. Winning the boys' division was the squad from Cyprus H'gh School, long known for their swimming abilities. Justin Jensen took first place in the consolation bracket in the 100-yard freestyle and eighth place in the finals in the 50-yard freestyle. Wayne Melling, Lyle Jensen, Scott Brown, and Justin Jensen made up the 400-yard freestyle relay team, which took second place in the consolation bracket. The girls' squad from Timpview took first place in their division at the state competition. Coston said that his team is young and can look forward to improving im-proving each year. The team has a fine program and loses very few top swimmers this year, he said. |
