Show Keeping Your Engine Cool It's all too easy for your car to overheat if you don't know how to keep . your cooling system in shape. It's good to drain and flush the system seasonally to fight corrosion. A "reverse "re-verse flush" is the most effective kind, and most service stations have the necessary equipment to handle the job. You can have the coolest car around if your remember remem-ber to clean the radiator and drain and flush the entire en-tire cooling system seasonally season-ally Also check the coolant level. Add a 50-50 mixture of water and glycol antifreeze anti-freeze if it's too low. Check your car's hoses for cracks, leaks and swelling swel-ling and make sure clamps are tight. Hoses should get a special look every two years, with possible change in mind. Here's an easy way to check belts. Press down on the middle of each one. If it doesn't give more than about half an inch, the tension is at the proper level. Have your car's pressure cap checked regularly with a special pressure tester. And finally, clean the radiator by spraying with a hose from the engine side with the engine off and cool. If the radiator is clogged, air flow is reducec and so is your car's coo' ing efficiency. |
