Show Burglary case Suspect bound over for trial Seventh Circuit Court Judge Whitney D. Hammond Wednesday bound a Vernal man over for trial in 4th District Court on a charge of burglary of a grocery store January 13. Hammond ordered Brian Maestas, 19, to be arraigned ar-raigned on the charge in district court on May 25. He is free on $500 bail. Maestas is accused of taking part in the burglary of the Thrifty Corner Store, 1522 West Highway 40, along with three other persons. Vernal Ver-nal City Police have arrested two other men in the case, one of whom is being extradited from Walsenburg, Colo. A female who allegedly took part has not been arrested, according to Deputy Uintah County Attorney Richard Davidson. Evidence presented in Wednesday's preliminary hearing included a written transcript of an interview in which Maestas allegedly confessed to taking part in the burglary. But Maestas refused to sign the docu-: docu-: ment and was then arrested, police detective Paul Parker testified. Parker said a tip he received January 18 directed him to Maestas. According to the detective's detec-tive's testimony, Maestas said he sat in the female's van with her while the two men broke into the store through a window. Parker said he went to Maestas' home January 22, where he talked with the suspect and arranged for the interview. Parker said evidence gathered at the scene included in-cluded fingerprints inside the store and foot prints and tire marks in the snow outside. Items taken included 25 packages and four jars of beef jerky, 76 candy bars, six packages of cheese, four packages of bologna, 10 packages of ham and eight packages of salami; also, three and a half cases of beer, 15 cartons of cigarettes, three lighters and eight watches, according to the police report. |
