FISHING OPENER-One of few streams in Utah expected to be hot fishing on opener is Green River. Fishing predictions tfor May 29 -- Wah opener By Hartt Wixom, Vernal Express Outdoors Writer The hatchery trucks are rolling! They'll add some "Angler's Sugar" to every waterway not enclosed, or '" overflooding, because come May 29 someone so-meone will drop a line in it. ' The only way you could elude the ' fishing horde at the 5 a.m. opener would ,be to try the year-round waters like ' lower Provo, Hyrum, and Starvation ""'Reservoirs et al-unless of course you stay home and lock the doors. ' The annual angling circus is here, , and approximately one-fifth of the state's one million-plus population will take advantage of it, in spite of the fact many waters have been open all year. 1 Following are a few predicted hot spots in northern, central, and eastern Utah: Cache-While the Logan and Blacksmith Fork Rivers (including Temple Fork of the Logan) are far too high and also roiled from mid-canyon down, the reservoirs on those streams will provide natural browns and planter rainbows. The Little Bear below Hyrum is open and fishable now, but will likely receive more trout by the opener. Other potential hot spots are Wellsville Reservoir, Reser-voir, Porcupine ; check out Ballard Springs, Spr-ings, side streams like Blacksmith's Rock Creek, Curtis Creek for Fish. Special regulations on Blacksmith above Rock Creek, so study proclamation. proclama-tion. Carbon County-Some nice browns in the Price River (Lower Fish Creek) below Scofield. The latter should produce pro-duce many limits, although size not always as big as say Strawberry or Deer Creek. Daggett County-Sheep Creek will have planters, with Flaming Gorge expected ex-pected good for lake trout, rainbows, some tapering brown trout fishing which has been open all year. The Green River below Flaming Gorge should be one of best bets in state, high but not as roiled as many, with limits of 1-2 lb. rainbows possible for baiters and lure-casters. Higher release of water from dam growing larger fish. Some taken last fall to four pounds indicates potential, especially below Little Hole i crowds. , i Duchesne and Uintah Counties-Some' of my favorite streams here, including Duchesne and Strawberry below Starvation, Star-vation, although murky conditions can ruin opener. Check for daily color, content. con-tent. When not roiled, excellent early season fishing from Rock Creek, Lake Fork, Frog Ponds, Uinta smaller trout on the Whiterocks, Yellowstone, Ashley and Brush Creeks, Steinaker, Sand Wash, Red Fleet, bulging with water and hatchery stockers. Moon Lake better bet-ter when warming up but some planters. Possibility of good brown has lessened with time, but a few show occasionally. oc-casionally. Uinta Mountain lakes, wait a month. Morgan County-Weber too high for best fishing, possibilities on Stoddard Slough (flies only), Lost Creek, East Canyon below reservoir. East Canyon Reservoir likely to yield many limits off bank, boat, although stream above expected ex-pected to remain too muddy. Lost Creek Reservoir an excellent possibility possibili-ty for rainbow, cutts. Summit and Wasatch Counties-Upper Provo too much liquid mud, but Deer Creek good for planters at Provo inlet, Wallsburg Bay, Island, usual places. Provo below Deer Creek very good for those who know how to weight and reach bottom-feeders. Spring Creek and Heber Valley streams great for kids, although crowds likely. Check special regulations in proclamation on all wild fish, Daniels Creek stocked, but high. Beaver Creek above Kamas ditto, work beaver dams; below Kamas in meadows still yields an occasional lunker, but elbow-to-elbow fishing. Rockport, Echo, cutts and rainbows hit well on opener if not too cold. Strawberry predicted same for usual whoppers, bait and slow lures for what could be s,lihtly sluggish fish. , ,. Tooele County- Some excellent, but often overlooked waters including Vernon Ver-non Reservoir south of Vernon, and heavily-pressured Settlement Canyon Reservoir. Check out cutts in South and North Willow, plus rainbows in Clover Creek. Top-notch brown trout on flies later on Vernon. Utah County-Most open to year-around year-around fishing, but some limits expected ex-pected in newly opening Hobble, Thistle, This-tle, Santaquin, Payson streams where water hesitates for a breath. Payson Lakes, other lakes with some smaller brook trout, plus hatchery help. Lower Provo could produce nice browns where not too high to get a line in. Weber County-Pineview open all year for middling bass and a few large rainbow. rain-bow. Ogden River below ditto for pan-size pan-size rainbows,, a few gragging-sized browns right into the city of Ogden. Weber River too high, some pickets later. Remember to get your license early and avoid the rush. Limit for the first weekend, Saturday-Sunday is six trout. Afterward the usual eight-fish limit applies, ap-plies, except on special waters. Some streams, including inlets to Strawberry, and many in Duchesne County do not open until July. |
